Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Dyersburg Middle School boys soccer team continued its undefeated march through school history on Saturday, defeating the University School of Jackson 2-0 at Jackson Christian School in the finals of the West Tennessee Regional Soccer Conference Tournament. “Our team is so well-balanced,” Dyersburg Head Coach Matt Duggan said. “We have a great defense, we have a great midfield and we have some attackers that can score some goals. “And, really, if you have a good goalkeeper, it really helps. That’s one of our strengths, too, that we have a really good goalkeeper. Duggan added the balance goes from top to bottom grade-wise on the Trojan roster. “We’ve got a special group of eighth graders and they have pulled a ton of weight this year,” Duggan said. “We’ve had some seventh and sixth graders that have been on the field most of the season.” Dyersburg had multiple chances early as most of the first half was played on the...

Choctaw softball shuts out South Gibson, clinches top seed

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Just four days after the two teams combined for 15 runs in Newbern, runs came a lot harder to come by on Friday in Medina as Dyer County scored early then held off the Lady Hornets for a 2-0 victory at South Gibson to clinch the top seed in next week’s District 13-3A Tournament. Dyer County got things going early as Kierstyn Ray singled then advanced to second on an Evie Rogers sacrifice bunt. Choctaw Rylee Key then doubled her in to put the orange and white on top 1-0 after the top of the first inning. After South Gibson worked around a leadoff error and a one-out single in the top of the second, the Lady Hornets looked to pull even. Davidson led off with a single then Flowers added a base hit two batters later. But, a fly out and a ground out got Dyer County out of the frame with its lead still intact. The Choctaws caught a break to open the top of the fourth inning. A long fly ball from Katie Beth Caldwell was dropped by...

Big Orange Report April 24, 2025

Image
Spring Wrap Tennessee completed spring drills and despite the commotion surrounding the transfer of the starting quarterback, several younger players served notice that they intended to become significant contributors to the team this fall. The wide receiver room and the defensive backfield were two positions that were attracting attention during spring training. A pair of true freshmen who enrolled early and joined the team in December turned some heads in March and early April. Travis Smith (6-3, 207, 4.45) displayed speed, route running ability and good hands as he attempted to live up to his lofty recruiting rankings. Classmate Radarius Jackson (6-2, 206, 4.5) is starting to look like one of the real gems of the incoming class. Jackson had the most spectacular catch in the spring practice finale when he went up high in the endzone, pulled down a pass with one hand and scored while a defensive back was in contact with him on the play. Both these freshman have premium size and ...

Lady Trojans fall as South Gibson rallies late

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyersburg looked to pick up its second District 13-3A win in as many nights on Tuesday but were unable to answer a late South Gibson rally, falling to the Lady Hornets 7-3 at Doug French Field. Cannon was hit by a pitch then scored when Hall reached on a ground ball to put South Gibson on the board. Whittemore doubled then Scott singled in a run to put the Lady Hornets on top 2-0 after two and a half innings. Dyersburg answered in the bottom of the fourth. Avery Hicks led off with a single then Addie Gatlin doubled before an out was made at third base on the play. Kyleigh Littles continued her hot steak with a single. But, the next batter struck out and it looked as though the Lady Hornets would get out of the frame. Bella Turnage was hit by a pitch...

Sawyers Stadium in Dyersburg, scoring a pair of goals in the first half then holding off Crockett for the 2-1 win in the tournament semifinals. With the score tied through much of the first half, DMS got on the board late in the frame. With just over 11 minutes left in the half, Trojan Hudson Ford put the ball in the goal to give Dyersburg a 1-0 lead in the 19 th minute. The Trojans doubled their lead moments later thanks to a miscue on the Crockett County defense. This error left Ford open just a few feet from the goal and he easily put the ball in for the second goal of the half and a 2-0 DMS lead in the 21 st minute. Dyersburg’s lead lasted through the rest of the half as the Trojans took the two-goal lead into the break. Both teams had a couple of chan...
