Dyersburg looked to pick up its second District 13-3A win in
as many nights on Tuesday but were unable to answer a late South Gibson rally,
falling to the Lady Hornets 7-3 at Doug French Field.
The Lady Trojans were able to hold the good-hitting South
Gibson offense off the board for the first two innings before the Lady Hornets
got through with a pair in the top of the third. Cannon was hit by a pitch then
scored when Hall reached on a ground ball to put South Gibson on the board.
Whittemore doubled then Scott singled in a run to put the Lady Hornets on top
2-0 after two and a half innings.
Dyersburg answered in the bottom of the fourth. Avery Hicks led off with a single then Addie Gatlin doubled before an out was made at third base on the play. Kyleigh Littles continued her hot steak with a single. But, the next batter struck out and it looked as though the Lady Hornets would get out of the frame. Bella Turnage was hit by a pitch then Avery Gatlin sent a ball down the first base line which was misplayed and reached safely. The play kept the inning alive and scored a run. Izzie Odom followed with a two-run double to give Dyersburg a 3-2 lead after four innings.
But, as South Gibson can do, the Lady Hornet bats heated up.
Teague walked then Hall singled and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt from
Whittemore which loaded the bases. Dyersburg was able to get the next batter to
ground back to Addie Gatlin in the circle who threw home for the first out of
the frame. But, Davidson bunted in a run then Ballentine singled in another. A
flyball led to another South Gibson run before a Flowers single scored another
to put South Gibson up 6-3 after the top of the fifth inning.
After holding Dyersburg to just a two-out single from
Turnage in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Hornets added a run in the seventh
on a Davidson solo homer to put South Gibson on top 7-3 heading into the bottom
of the seventh.
Odom walked to lead off the frame but was stranded on the bases
after stealing second as the Lady Hornets got a strikeout, a ground out and a
fly out to secure the win.
Littles and Turnage each had a pair of singles to lead the way for the Lady Trojans at the plate to go along with doubles by Addie Gatlin and Odom.
Addie Gatlin took the loss in the circle, allowing seven
runs on ten hits with a trio of strikeouts in seven innings.
Dyersburg returns to action on Tuesday when the Lady Trojans
close out the regular season with a trip to Brighton at 6:30 p.m.
