Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Following his team’s come-from-behind win over Fulton County last week in Tiptonville, Lake County Head Coach Hunter Short has been honored by his peers with an award encompassing three classifications across Tennessee. The Tennessee Football Coaches Association has named Short as last week’s Coach of the Week for Class 1A-3A. “Man it’s a big honor to me that fellow coaches have noticed the hard work that’s being put into the program,” Short said of the honor. “It’s an honor that makes me know that I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing exactly where I’m supposed to be doing it.” "The time and effort he puts into his kids and program are second to none," Lake County Schools Athletic Director Mike Moore said. "And to be selected by his peers shows that they notice what is transpiring in Lake Co. Very deserving!!" Lake County stands at 3-2 (0-1 in Region 7-1A) as the Falcons prepare to return to regio...

Lady Trojans clinch regular season District 13AA Championship

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The first tier of the postseason will run through J.C. Sawyers Stadium at Dyersburg High School as the Lady Trojans rallied from a one-goal deficit to defeat Crockett County 2-1 on Monday night at home. The game remained tied at 0-0 through much of the first half before a corner kick from Crockett County led to a Lady Cavalier goal and a 1-0 lead for the visitors. Dyersburg, though, had spent much of the first half on the Crockett County side of midfield and had several close calls. Those finally paid off late in the first half as Haddy Manneh put the ball in the goal in the 38th minute to tie the game at 1-1 at the half. The Lady Trojans wasted little time in the second half getting on the board as Manneh scored on a rebound of a Meredith Zamzow shot to put her team on top 2-1 in the 47 th minute. From there, the Lady Trojans fended off Crockett County while nearly adding to their lead on the way to the win. The win cli...

Dyer County boys win region; Hill, Morris take individual titles

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports It was a big day for a lot of local high school golfers as The Farms hosted the Region 8A Tournament beginning on Monday morning. When all was said and done that afternoon, Dyer County’s boys golf team punched its ticket to the TSSAA Class A State Tournament next week   in Sevierville while a pair of other local golfers took home the individual titles. The region win marks Dyer County’s first trip to state in either boys or girls golf as a team in school history. “The greens were in tough spots so, when you were approaching the hole, you had to be strategic about it,” Dyer County Head Coach Lyle LaRue said. “You had to maybe not go for the birdies but aim for the safe part of the green. “From what I can tell that’s what they were doing the whole match. Put in on the back of the green and keep it in play and you’ve got a chance.” Dyer County was led by freshman Beau Thurman, who shot a 74 to finish in a four-way tie f...

DMS Lady Trojans avenge loss, eliminate Dyer County

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports After suffering their first loss in school history to rival Dyer County last month, the Dyersburg Middle School girls soccer team paid back the Lady Choctaws on Sunday afternoon by ending the orange and white’s season with a 5-1 loss in the semifinals of the TSSAA DIII District 13AA Tournament in Newbern. The Lady Trojans got on the board in the first ten minutes of action, scoring on a Fatou Manneh goal in the eighth minute to go up 1-0. Dyersburg added another goal from Manneh a dozen minutes later as her goal in the 20 th minute put the Lady Trojans on top 2-0. Needing a goal before the half, Dyer County threatened to cut the lead in half late in the first half but Dyersburg was up to the task, getting a third goal from Manneh. This one came in the 28 th minute and put the Lady Trojans on top 3-0 at the half. Dyersburg got on the board again early in the second half as a foul in the box during the 36 th minute led t...

Dyersburg holds off Central second-half effort for region win

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports A quartet of first-half turnovers both stung the Rebels and benefitted the Trojans, who jumped out to a 28-0 lead at the half before Central made things interesting the second half as Dyersburg had two touchdowns wiped off the board before claiming a 37-20 win over Obion County Central on Friday night in Troy. Dyersburg Head Coach Bart Stowe agreed the big lead early was all about taking advantage of the opportunities the Trojans were given thanks to turnovers. “Was really proud of us in the first half,” Stowe explained. “In the second half, we came out and made some mistakes. “I’m really proud of our defense. Our defense stepped up and got a safety. In the second half, we had two touchdowns called back. Holy smokes! Because of errors that we made. Simple errors that we’ve got to correct.” Stowe added the Trojans were playing some of their team in different positions due to injuries, but that was part of it. “Really pro...
