  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports An offensive battle in the opening half turned into a defensive struggle down the stretch as the Falcons took a 16-14 lead into the half and held it there to get the win on the road at St. Benedict on Friday night in Cordova. The Eagles scored in the first quarter but the Falcons responded with a Ka’Devon Gross touchdown to tie the game in the second frame on a 78-yard run. The two-pointer was also added by Gross to put Lake County on top 8-6. The Eagles answered with a score but Lake County battled back to retake the lead with another Gross touchdown and two-pointer to take a 16-14 lead into the half. Though there were some struggles by the Falcons in the second half, Lake County held on to get the win on the road and even their record at 1-1 on the season. Lake County returns to action on Friday, Sept. 5 when the Falcons travel to Ripley to take on the Tigers at 7 p.m. Coverage of this story brought to you by:

  Spencer Noel Staff Reporter, JP Productions Sports After a thrilling overtime victory against the Dyersburg Trojans last week, the Choctaws looked to keep the momentum going on the road against Head Coach Justin Dubriel’s former team, the Union City Golden Tornadoes. The Choctaws were able to capitalize on early mistakes to take the victory on the road 34-14. The Choctaws won the coin toss and elected to receive, and Antonio Franklin took the opening kick to the Union City 33-yard line. Dyer County got into a third and 4, which was a no gain on a Landon Daniels run. On 4th down, Daniels hit Franklin for a first down at the Union City 19. Two plays later on third and 9, a toss to Korey Taylor gained five and Dyer County gained the first via penalty.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sport After a tough loss in last week’s season opener, the Trojans bounced back in Week 2 on Friday night to defeat Brighton 36-27 at J.C. Sawyers Stadium in Dyersburg. The Trojans wasted little time getting on the board as Dyersburg scored on the first drive of the game. The first possession was capped by a direct-snap run to Peyton Hill for a 22-yard touchdown run. The gutsy playcall was made on a fourth-and-6 play. Elian Gonzalez added the extra point to put the black and gold on top 7-0 with 7:20 left in the first quarter. Brighton had an answer though, scoring on its first possession to tie the game at 7-7. Dyersburg drove the ball down the field on its next possession and capped the drive with another Hill touchdown. This one was from three yards out on second-and-goal.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Obion County Central football team continued its successful start to the 2025 season, jumping out to a big lead early before defeating Gibson County 46-0 on Friday night in Dyer. The Central running game accounted for the bulk of the Rebel offense which totaled 293 yards with all but 11 coming on the ground. The blue and red’s offense touchdowns were highlight be a trifecta of TDs by senior running back Tucker Moore, who rushed for 195 yards on nine carries. “It was important this week to come out and set the tone early,” Central Head Coach Clayton Morris said. “We needed to be sure we were dialed in mentally and focused on both sides of the ball. “That run game, when it can travel regardless of the weather or how long the road trip, if you’re able to line up and run the ball, good things are going to happen for your team.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports After being held scoreless through the first half by an improved and stingy Dyer County defense, the Lady Trojans were finally able to break through onto the scoreboard in the second half with five goals including four in the final 20 minutes to take a 5-0 win over the Lady Choctaws on Thursday night at J.C. Sawyers Stadium in Dyersburg. Both teams had chances in the opening half but Dyer County was able to apply pressure to the Dyersburg defense. Though the orange and white did not score during the first 40 minutes of action, the Lady Choctaws kept the black and gold on their heels through much of the half. Dyersburg goalkeeper Grace Ann Webb was able to keep the ball from going into the goal to help the Lady Trojan defense preserve the shutout.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyer County continued its strong play against district competition since moving down to Class AA in 2021, defeating rival Dyersburg in straight sets on Thursday afternoon in the Terry Glover Gymnasium. The Choctaws came out of the blocks strong as the orange and white jumped out to a 6-0 lead after a pair of kills from senior Rylee Key. Dyer County continued to build its lead before a kill from Lady Trojan Murphy Morgan sparked a quick Dyersburg answer before the orange and white took the first set 25-10. Dyer County started the second set even stronger with an 11-3 open to the frame powered by kills from Key and Blair Acree. As the Choctaws built their lead higher and higher, the Lady Trojans were able to get points off kills from Morgan and Bella Turnage as Dyer County took the second set 25-5.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Though Union City holds a lead in the overall series between Dyer County and the Tornadoes, the Choctaws (1-0) will look to make another dent in the deficit when the orange and white travel to Union City in Week 2 action. Coming out of a one-point win over the Trojans last Friday night in Dyersburg, Dyer County Head Coach Justin Dubriuel said the Choctaws beat a good team in the season opener. Still, the first-year head coach is keeping things in perspective. “But we can’t be satisfied with just being 1-0 or just beating Dyersburg,” Dubruiel said. “We have to continue to get better each week.” Dubruiel talked about where the Tornadoes concern him on offense. “Offensively, they don’t do a lot but what they do they are good at,” Dubruiel said. “The QB is a kid who is tough as nails.” Dubruiel pointed to the need for a big night from the entire Dyer County defense. “Defensively, we need a big game from everyone,” the Cho...

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Coming off a season-opening loss at home to Obion County Central in the Battle of Reelfoot, Lake County will hit the road for a two-game road trip as they head south to St. Benedict this Friday looking to even up their season record. Lake County Head Coach Hunter Short shared what he wants the Falcons to learn from their loss to the Rebels last Friday night as they move forward through the regular season and, hopefully, beyond. “In most if not all games all year that we won’t have as many players as the other team,” Short said. “The lesson is we have to keep fighting play after play for each other because nobody is coming to save us.” Looking at the Eagles, Short shared his concerns for Friday night. “On offense, they run a lot of condensed formations to give themselves opportunities to hit the edge quick,” the Falcon head coach said. “So we have to be sure and keep outside containment.” To do this, Short said he needs ...
