Lake County falls to St. Benedict in Saturday action

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Lake County Falcons took an early lead on Saturday afternoon in a non-region football tilt, but the St. Benedict Eagles answered with six straight touchdowns over the rest of the game to take a 38-7 win over the green and gold in Tiptonville. The Falcon defense made a big play on the opening Eagle drive. On third down, the Eagles attempted a pass only to have the ball find its way into the hands of Falcon defender Cade Lanier, who returned the ball about 20 yards for the touchdown. Landon Crockett added the extra point to give Lake County a 7-0 lead with 10:57 left in the first quarter. The Eagles got a big answer thanks to a 67-yard run by Najja Williams set St. Benedict up with a first-and-goal from the 7-yard line. From there, it took a couple plays before Williams capped off the drive with a two-yard run. The extra point failed, leaving Lake County on top 7-6 with 9:42 left in the quarter. Dyersburg falls to Brighton after late Cardinal flurry

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyersburg dropped to 0-2 on the season on Friday night as the Trojans took the lead in the second half before a pair of late Cardinal scores led to a 32-28 loss at Brighton in non-region action. A turning point in the game came at the end of the second quarter. With the Trojans trailing 20-14 in the closing seconds of the first half, Brighton was able to stop the black and gold on a third-and-1 before a Cardinal penalty put the ball on the half-yard line. But, the Trojans were shut out of the end zone when Brighton’s defense stopped Dyersburg on the ground to preserve the six-point halftime lead. The Trojans were able to get on the board in the fourth quarter as a touchdown pass from Logston Morgan to Ty Seaton – the duo’s second of the night – tied the game at 20. The extra point put the Trojans on top 21-20. Later in the frame, an Eric Funderburk interception return for a touchdown put Dyersburg on the board again. The ex...

Choctaws trade blows with Tornadoes, pull out the win

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyer County moved to 2-0 on the season on Friday night in Newbern but it wasn’t an easy task as the Choctaws had to answer Union City multiple times on the scoreboard before pulling out a 28-26 win at Choctaw Stadium. “They fought hard,” Dyer County Head Coach Justin Dubruiel said. “Defense fought hard. Offense fought hard. “There were a lot of things happening in this game. I liked our resolve. We stayed calm under pressure.” Union City was able to capitalize on early struggles by the Choctaws. After pinning Dyer County down inside their own 5-yard line, Union City got an interception which led to a return to the 7-yard line of Dyer County. From there, it took two plays for Grant Sinclair to find the end zone on a seven-yard run. The extra point put Union City on top 7-0 with 9:55 left in the opening frame. “We did a good job of putting ourselves in a hole there,” the Choctaw head coach admitted. “But, our kids found way...

Lady Choctaws charge over Covington for mercy-rule win

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Dyer County girls’ soccer team ended a busy week on the pitch with a strong performance, dominating Covington for a 9-0 mercy-rule that ended in the 52 nd minute on Thursday evening in Newbern. It didn’t take long for the Lady Choctaws to find the net as freshman striker Addisyn Trout put the ball in the goal in the fourth minute to give Dyer County a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Peyton Murphy got on the board in the Lady Choctaws 9 th minute to make it a 2-0 game. Moments later, a foul in the box led to a penalty kick which was taken by Jenna Claire Anderson. The Lady Choctaw found the back of the net to push the Dyer County lead to 3-0 in the 13 th minute. The first-half scoring continued in the 21 st minute with a surprise goal by Grace Webb, who sent the ball down the field and found the goal when the Covington keeper misread the ball and let it go over her head for Webb’s score. The sophomore’s goal put Dyer Coun...

Big Orange Report August 27, 2026

Image
That is a Wrap The Big Orange football squad wrapped up the second and final scrimmage of pre-season practice on Saturday. As a precaution, the staff limited the work of several key players including senior running back DeSean Bishop. The battle for playing time behind Bishop is intense. Tulane transfer Javin Gordon has inched ahead of the younger backs, Daune Morris and Justin Baker but the competition will continue over the next two weeks. The third wide receiver slot is also still very much undecided. Mike Matthews and Brylon Staley are set and good to go as both are on a national watchlist for the top pass catcher in the nation. Radarious Jackson, Travis Smith, Jr. and five-star freshman T.K. Keys have all had their moments in practice. Of course, all these guys will see the field in a rotation type setting this year. The same scenario applies to tight end because projected starter Ethan Davis has yet to go full speed at practice thus far. Desaahn Brame and transfer Trent Tho...

Dyer County cruises past Dyersburg in district tilt

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyer County continued its control of the volleyball court in District 13AA action as the Lady Choctaws needed just three sets for a second straight night in league play, defeating the Lady Trojans on Tuesday night in the Terry Glover Gymnasium. Dyer County came out hot to start the opening set, taking a 10-1 lead after kills from Blair Agee and Katie Beth Caldwell. Dyersburg was able to cut into the lead momentarily with a run highlighted by a Sadie Frye kill to help pull the Lady Trojans to an 11-5 deficit. But, Dyer County ended strong with aces from Ady B. Harrison and Ella Beasley to take the first set 25-13. Though Dyersburg got a couple quick points to take a lead, the Lady Choctaws stormed back to take a 9-3 advantage following a Zoey Morris ace. Dyersburg battled back with an Ariah Ward kill to cut into the lead. Dyer County clinched the set down the stretch with a long run highlighted by a Caldwell ace to take the se...

Lady Trojans dominate Brighton for DMS win

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports With a pair of hat tricks from an eighth-grade scoring duo, Dyersburg Middle School cruised to a 7-0 win over visiting Brighton on Monday evening at the Dyersburg Soccer Complex. The Lady Trojans got two early goals from Annslee Smith to take a 2-0 lead in the first half. Fatou Manneh then tacked on two goals to help give DMS a 4-0 lead at the half. Dyersburg Middle added a third goal from Smith as the eighth grader completed her hat track with around ten minutes left in the game thanks to a Manneh assist. Tinley Newsom then added a goal to extend the Dyersburg lead to 6-0 late in the game before Manneh scored for the third time to make it a seven-goal lead for the Lady Trojans. The Lady Trojans return to action on Thursday when Dyersburg travels to Millington at 6 p.m. Coverage of this story is brought to you by:

Dyersburg ties McKenzie in girls soccer action

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Despite a one-goal lead at the half, Dyersburg had to battle from behind on Monday night at the Dyersburg Soccer Complex to earn a 4-4 tie with McKenzie in non-district action. Dyersburg got on the board in the first half with a pair of goals from Meredith Zamzow and another by Haddy Manneh to counter two McKenzie goals in the opening frame to take a 3-2 lead at the half. But, McKenzie opened the second half with back-to-back goals to take 4-3 lead. The Lady Rebel lead held until late in the game when a Manneh goal tied the game with about two minutes left. Neither team were able to get on the board again, resulting in a tie of four goals apiece. The Lady Trojans have a quick turnaround as Dyersburg heads to Jackson on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to face Trinity Christian Academy in the second of three games this week.
