  Football Recruiting Heat Up Last week the Tennessee football staff and support groups entertained over 20 prospects at the annual 865 event in Knoxville. While high school recruiting seems to have been forced out of the headlines by the NIL and transfer portal news, it is still important to Coach Josh Heupel that the Volunteers continue to bring in young, fresh talent to the program each year. The group that arrived on Rocky Top was headlined by quarterback commitment Faizon Brandon who wanted to be in town to assist Vol recruiters with securing addition verbals from some of the talent on had. Brandon (6-3.5, 195, 4.5) will be a senior this fall at Grimsley H.S. in Greensboro, North Carolina. He has been rated the No. 1 overall prospect in the country by  247.com  and Rivals lists him as the No. 1 quarterback recruit and No. 2 overall prospect in the nation.   Dyersburg High School honored the members of the Trojan Baseball team with its annual awards banquet on Wednesday night at the Foundry.  Multiple players received honors including team and District 13-3A official plaques.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The season for the Choctaw duo of Clay Dodds and Seth LaRue came to an end on the biggest stage for a tennis doubles team in Tennessee as the Dyer County tennis doubles team fell in straight sets to the team from Murfreesboro Central on Thursday morning in Murfreesboro. Dyer County’s duo dropped the first set of the day to the Murfreesboro Central team of Everett Smith and Anusham Shah 6-1 then fell in the second set 6-1 to end their season. The Murfreesboro team went on to lose in the semifinals later in the day on Thursday. Dodds and LaRue are the first doubles team from Dyer County to advance to the state tournament in the history of the Choctaw tennis program. The two were also part of the Dyer County boys team who became the first in the history of the school to win both District 14AA and Region 7AA Championships.   Super Showdown The SoftVols will host Nebraska in the Super Regionals this weekend with a trip to the Softball World Series in Oklahoma City on the line. This matchup should be one of the marquee showdowns in the eight supers. Former two time national champion at Oklahoma, Jordy Bahl, will  lead the Cornhuskers into Knoxville after blazing through the Baton Rouge regional. Tennessee took care of business and proved the old adage in baseball and softball, "Good pitching stops good hitting" almost every time. The Lady Vols beat the bombardiers from Ohio State twice and limited the Buckeyes to just two runs in 14 innings. OSU led the nation in home runs this season and blasted six round trippers in their opening victory over North Carolina.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Dyer County track season came to an end with three individuals and one relay team finishing their season on the biggest stage in track in Tennessee as the Choctaw and Lady Choctaw athletes took part in the TSSAA Class AA Meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. The day started early for Choctaw senior Clark French. French, a two-time state qualifier thanks to his appearance in the TSSAA State Cross Country Meet this past fall, finished his high school distance running career on Tuesday morning in one of the first races of the day with a seventh-place finish out of eight runners. Just after lunch, one of the most prolific track and field careers at Dyer County High School came to an end as Anitra Honore competed in her fourth straight shot put state competition, finishing in sixth place to end her track career in orange and white.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports No matter how things go Thursday and potentially Friday for Dyer County tennis duo Clay Dodds and Seth LaRue, they are assured of one thing. Their 2024 season as well as that of the Choctaw tennis team as a whole will go down as a historic one for the program. As part of the first Dyer County Choctaw tennis team to win both district and regional championships, LaRue and Dodds will begin a journey on Thursday morning which could culminate in a TSSAA Class AA Doubles State Championship for the duo. All the unbeaten team need to do is win two more matches.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Choctaw softball team took an early lead in their consolation bracket matchup with McNairy Central on Wednesday afternoon but the Lady Bobcats put up crooked numbers in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to defeat Dyer County 7-2 to end the orange and white’s season. With two outs in the top of the first after Lady Bobcat pitcher Bailee Shelton struck out the first two Choctaw batters, Rylee Key got the Dyer County offense going with a double, and Emma Wray drew a walk. Evie Rogers then hit a short pop into the infield that was misplayed, allowing her to reach safely and a run to score to put Dyer County on top 1-0 after a half inning. Dyer County was able to hold the lead until the third inning. After Shelton struck out two of the three batters in the top of the third inning, Central’s offense was able to get going thanks to a pair of illegal pitches, which led to a Rhyan Gray walk to lead off the inning.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports With runs and its coming at a premium in morning action at the TSSAA Class 3A State Tournament Opening Round Game between Dyer County, the Lady Devils struck early then added another two innings later and held on to hand the Choctaws a 3-0 opening round loss on Wednesday morning. Unicoi County allowed only a two-out walk to Rylee Key then got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first. Engle doubled to lead off the bottom of the frame then Byrd followed with a long home run two batters later to put the Lady Devils on top 2-0 after one inning. Neither team was able to get a hit until the bottom of the third inning when the Lady Devils cashed in again. A hit batter and a walk were followed by a single from Woodward to load the bases.
