The Choctaw softball team took an early lead in their
consolation bracket matchup with McNairy Central on Wednesday afternoon but the
Lady Bobcats put up crooked numbers in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to
defeat Dyer County 7-2 to end the orange and white’s season.
With two outs in the top of the first after Lady Bobcat pitcher Bailee Shelton struck out the first two Choctaw batters, Rylee Key got the Dyer County offense going with a double, and Emma Wray drew a walk. Evie Rogers then hit a short pop into the infield that was misplayed, allowing her to reach safely and a run to score to put Dyer County on top 1-0 after a half inning.
The Choctaws were able to get one of those runs back almost immediately.
Wray drew a walk then Rogers reached on an error to score Wray’s courtesy
runner, Emma McGavock, and cut the McNairy lead to 3-2 after three and a half
innings.
The Lady Bobcats’ offense began to churn again, getting a
Linlee Davidson single to lead fof the inning then a Gray sacrifice bunt. Mercer
drew a walk then a Bailee Shelton single two batters later scored two and extended
the Central lead to 5-2 after four innings.
Dyer County looked poised to answer with singles from Abbie Gibbons and Kierstyn Ray, but a popped up bunt led to a double play then a strikeout ended the frame with the orange and white still trailing by three.
Two innings later, Central put the game away as singles from
Davidson and Mercer led to two more runs as Callie Finlayson reached on an
error then Bailee Shelton singled in an run to put the Lady Bobcats on top 7-2
heading into the seventh inning.
Dyer County showed a spark of life in the top of the seventh
as Ray doubled with two outs. But, a strikeout followed to end the game and the
Choctaw season with McNairy moving on to face Unicoi County on Thursday at 9 a.m.
Ray led the way for the Choctaws at the plate with a double
and a single.
Woody took the loss, allowing five runs on two hits.
The loss ends the Dyer County season with a record of 31-11.
