  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports A three-run fifth inning proved costly for the Choctaws as South Gibson defeated Dyer County 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the winner’s bracket of the District 13-3A Tournament at Crockett County High School. After a pair of scoreless innings, Dyer County looked to get on the board as Nate Vick singled with one out then Landon Todd added a two-out single. But, after an error put the two freshmen at second and third, Talon Messer was intentionally walked which lead to a force out at second to end the Choctaw threat. The Hornets capitalized in the bottom of the frame with a two-run double by J BATEMAN to take a 2-0 lead after three innings. South Gibson then tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth to create plenty of insurance for the Hornets with a 5-0 lead after five. Dyer County did not go down without a fight.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyersburg was able to get out in front with a big first inning, but Crockett County was able to chip away and take the lead before having to hold off a seventh-inning Trojan rally to take the District 13-3A Tournament Quarterfinal 7-6 on Thursday evening in Alamo. The Trojans caught a break early on as Evan Thompson reached on an error when a popup was misplayed. Dyersburg took advantage two plays later when Alex Page homered to left to put the black and gold on top by two. A pair of walks were followed by a Brett Horner grounder to third which allowed Ryan Wesson to score. Ethan Austin then reached on an error to plate a run and put Dyersburg on top 4-0 after a half inning. But, back-to-back home runs from Callan Willis and Brady Fronabarger in a span of four pitches cut Dyersburg’s lead in half to 4-2 after one inning.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Though Dyersburg struck early and often with a trio of runs in the top of the first, a big bottom of the second inning by Dyer County proved to be the difference as the Choctaw softball team defeated the Lady Trojans 13-3 on Thursday night in the District 13-3A Winner’s Bracket Quarterfinal at Crockett County High School. The Lady Trojans got on the board in the top of the first inning thanks to a pair of Choctaw errors and heads’ up running by senior Chelby Jordan. Jordan looked to open the inning with a ground out but a bad throw allowed her to reach then attempt to take second. A second error on the play put Jordan at third base. Avery Hicks followed with an RBI single to put Dyersburg on the board.   Production Over Retention Tennessee men's basketball coach Rick Barnes is no spring chicken. He will turn 72 years old on July 17th of this year. But Barnes has proven that you actually can "teach an old dog new tricks." He confirmed that theory when he indicated that production over retention is the most important factor in leading a college basketball team in this chaotic world of NIL and the Portal. Instead of being stubborn and fighting today's environment like Clemson football coach Dabo Sweeney, Barnes has accepted the realities of the moment. Barnes has partnered with Athletic Director Danny White and some big money boosters to re-stock and reload the Big Orange Roster with what they hope will be difference makers that can get the team beyond the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament next spring.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Opening the postseason on the road for the first time since the TSSAA went to four classes, Dyer County made short work of the Tomcats, taking a 10-0 win over Haywood on Wednesday in the opening round of the District 13-3A Tournament in Alamo. Dyer County got on the board early with four runs in the bottom of the first. Talon Messer tripled in two to get things going for the Tribe as an Easton Ozment groundout later in the inning plated another after a balk plated a run. The Choctaws took a 4-0 lead after one inning. The Choctaws added to their lead in the bottom of the second on a single from Jake Wenzler to go up 5-0 after two frames.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Despite trailing after two and a half innings, the Trojans answered in a big way with six unanswered runs then finished off the Rebels with a late surge on the way to an 11-4 win over Obion County Central on Wednesday at Crockett County in the opening round of the District 13-3A Tournament. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Dyersburg pulled even with the Rebels with an RBI double from JP Noblin to tie the game at 1-1 after three frames. Dyersburg had a big inning in the bottom of the following stanza. A two-out single from Ethan Austin got things going as Ty Seaton drew a walk to load the bases. Jayce Ellerbrook drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Trojans on top. Evan Thompson drew another walk to plate a run then Noblin singled in another run to extend the lead to three runs.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports After early-week storms brought a premature end to the regular season, Dyersburg got its softball postseason off to a successful start on Wednesday night in Alamo with a 15-0 win over Haywood in the opening round of the District 13-3A Tournament. In the first-round victory, Lady Trojan senior Izzie Odow faced one over the minimum on the way to holding the Lady Tomcats hitless over the three-inning, no-hit win, striking out five along the way. To say Dyersburg set the tone early is an understatement. After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Lady Trojan offense erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning. Chelby Jordan singled to lead off the frame then Lily Kate Jones reached on an error two batters later to plate her senior teammate.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports With the postseason approaching and the end of the regular season coming up, Dyersburg’s soccer team battled through a back-and-forth match with Crockett County before falling 6-5 to the Cavaliers on Friday evening at J.C. Sawyers Stadium. After a scoreless ten minutes to open the game, Dyersburg got on the board with a long-distance goal from Trojan senior Elian Gonzalez in the 12 th minute to put the black and gold on top 1-0. The Crockett County answers were quick. The Cavaliers got goals in the 12 th and 14 th minutes to take a 2-1 lead. The Cavalier lead didn’t last very long as Dyersburg got a goal from Isaac Zamzow to tie the game at 2-2 in the 25 th minute. Crockett County had an answer for this goal as well, getting their response in the 29 th minute to take a 3-2 lead.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Dyersburg softball team completed a week which included three straight District 13-3A games, sweeping the trio of contests after a 3-1 win over Obion County Central on Wednesday evening at Doug French Field. The Lady Rebels were able to get on the board in the top of the first inning without evening getting the ball out of the infield. A dropped third strike and two Central base hits lead to an error as the first four batters reached base and put a run on the board for the visitor. Dyersburg settled down after that, as pitcher Izzie Odom struck out the next batter then got help from her defense to leave the top of the first trailing 1-0. Though the Lady Trojans were not able to get on the board early, the defense retired six of the next eight batters to get to the bottom of the third trailing by a run.
