Dyer County scores a baker’s dozen to top Lady Trojans

Though Dyersburg struck early and often with a trio of runs
in the top of the first, a big bottom of the second inning by Dyer County proved
to be the difference as the Choctaw softball team defeated the Lady Trojans
13-3 on Thursday night in the District 13-3A Winner’s Bracket Quarterfinal at
Crockett County High School.
Dyer County was able to get one of those runs back in the
bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Evie Rogers to cut the Dyersburg lead
to 3-1 after an inning.
The Choctaws’ big inning came in the bottom of the second
inning. Ryle White was hit by a pitch and Natalie Armstrong bunted her way on
before Kierstyn Ray got a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. Katie
Beth Caldwell doubled in two runs to tie the game then Rylee Key doubled in two
more to put Dyer County up 5-3. Allie Ables followed with a two-run home run to
double the Choctaws’ lead. Later in the inning, Kate Benedetto singled in a run
then Armstrong doubled in another to put the orange and white on top 9-3 after
two innings.
Dyer County added more to its side of the board in the bottom
of the fourth. Armstrong reached on an error then Ray and Caldwell singled.
Dyersburg’s defense was able to minimize the damage as Key reached on an error
to score a run before a fielder’s choice and a line out led to a force out at
third to leave Dyer County’s lead at only 10-3 after four frames.
The Lady Trojans looked to get on the board in the top of
the fifth as Jones reached on an error then Odom singled. But, after both
runners were moved up by a Murphy Morgan bunt, a liner to third was snagged by
Choctaw third baseman Rogers to doubled up Jones at third to end the threat.
Dyersburg was also able to get out of the fifth inning with
a double play to send the game into the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff triple from Ray was
followed by a Caldwell sacrifice fly to plate the junior. Key followed with a
single the Ables reached on an error. Emma Wray singled in a run then Benedetto
ended the game with a double to score Ables and bring the mercy rule into play.
All nine batters in the Dyer County lineup recorded at least
one hit with Ray leading the way with two singles and a triple while Caldwell
had two singles and a double. Key, Wray and Benedetto each had a double and a
single with Ables recording a homer and a single. Rogers added two singles in the
win.
Ava Hart picked up the win, shutting out the Lady Trojans
for the final five innings while allowing two hits and striking out two.
Dyersburg scattered six singles among six Lady Trojans with
McCaslin’s two-run base hit the big one of the day for the black and gold.
Dyer County will take on Crockett County in the District
13-3A Winner’s Bracket Semifinals on Saturday at 11 a.m. while the Lady Trojans
will face Obion County Central at 7 p.m. on Friday night in elimination game
action. All games are being played at Crockett County High School.
