  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyersburg’s three-year reign as District 13-3A Champions came to an end on Tuesday night as the Trojans were unseated by South Gibson as the Hornets defeated the black and gold 62-50 in Medina. The Trojans were able to lead early on multiple occasions following buckets from Jace Ward (two jumpers and a three-pointer) that put Dyersburg on top early, 7-6. But, South Gibson ended the frame on a 7-2 run to take a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. Dyersburg got an early bucket from Isaiah Thomas to cut the South Gibson lead to one possession but the Hornets answered quickly with a Jaxon Young score to go up 15-11.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports It had been since 2011 that the Lake County Falcons took home a district championship and a hard-fought game on Monday night at Bethel University in McKenzie ended that title drought via a 53-50 win over Gleason in the District 14-A Championship Game. With a pair of Jax Poole buckets and three-pointers from Aikee Ward and Mark Owens, Lake County jumped out to an early lead. Gleason stayed within striking distance thanks to four points from Kade Sawyers as the Bulldogs trailed 15-7 after one quarter. Seven points from Sawyers and six by Drake Lehmkuhl helped the Bulldogs pull closer. But, a balanced-scoring second frame by the Falcons helped Lake County lose only a point of their lead.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports After two unsuccessful tries to wrest the District 13-3A crown from Dyersburg, South Gibson finally took the spot on the top of the podium as the Lady Hornet defense stifled the Lady Trojans for a 40-23 win in Medina on Monday night in the District 13-3A Tournament Championship Game. The Lady Hornet defense kept Dyersburg off the board early, allowing only a bucket apiece to Chelby Jordan and Kaliyah Lewis while jumping out to a 16-4 lead on the offensive side. Jordan broke the scoring spree with a three-pointer as Dyersburg was able to cut it to six after ending the frame strong. The Lady Trojan trailed 17-11 heading into the second quarter. An early Jordan bucket was the only offense Dyersburg managed in the final eight minutes of the first half. The Lady Hornets ended the half on a 10-0 run to take a 27-13 lead at the break. Far, far fewer will be able to say they were a finalist for a Miss or Mr. Basketball Award during their final season on a high school court. Lady Trojan standout Chelby Jordan will be able to say both as she has signed to play with Belmont before a senior season which has seen her earn one of the three TSSAA Class 3A Miss Basketball Finalist honors.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Cavaliers cost the Dyersburg boys the outright regular-season district crown just a few days earlier but the Trojans gained a big measure of revenge on Saturday night, handing Crockett County a 66-51 loss in the District 13-3A Semifinals at South Gibson to advance to Tuesday night’s tournament championship game. Crockett County jumped out to an early lead, hitting its first three shots of the game to take a 6-3 lead in the opening frame. Dyersburg controlled things from there, though. Thanks to a five-point frame by Jace Ward and a three-pointer from Jayce Ellerbrook, the Trojans took a 14-9 lead at the end of the opening frame. While the Dyersburg defense held Crockett County to just nine points through the second quarter as well, the Trojan offense added to its lead.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Despite a very strong start by Gleason to open the District 14-A Semifinal on Friday night at Bethel University in McKenzie, Dresden battled back and made it interesting late before the Bulldogs claimed a 49-40 win over the Lions. Two three-pointers by Drake Lehmkuhl as well as single treys by Cade Sawyers and Parker Morgan were the highlights of a 16-0 run by Gleason to start the game which helped the Bulldogs take an 18-4 lead after one. Gleason’s lead swelled to 23-6 early in the second frame after a Sawyers bucket. Dresden began its climb back into contention with a quick 6-0 run capped by a bucket by Landon Floyd. Gleason answered with tallies from Brock Dilday and Sanders while Dresden got buckets from Jacoby Sutton and Cannon Floyd to trail 29-16 heading into the half.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports After guiding her team to the TMSAA Class AA State Tournament for the second straight season, Dyersburg Middle School’s Shaunda Strayhorn has been named the TMSAA District 26AA Coach of the Year. “I am excited about it,” Strayhorn admitted. “But, if I could trade winning state over getting coach of the year, I would.” Strayhorn was quick to deflect the credit for the strong season from herself back towards her players. “One thing about getting coach of the year, I can’t take all the credit,” she explained. “I feel like it was my team is the one who helped me reach this goal as well as my assistant coach.” For Strayhorn, the ability to win that final game of the season is something she would trade for any award like this. “I just wish that we could have won state for the girls,” Strayhorn added. “They really made coaching easy for me.” Coverage of this story is brought to you by:  

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports A strong second-quarter effort set the tone for the District 13-3A Semifinal at Medina on Friday night as the Lady Trojans turned a five-point lead into a 22-point advantage on the way to a 49-31 win over Crockett County to advance to the district championship for the fourth straight season. Leading 10-5 after one quarter, the Lady Trojans went on attack on both offense and defensively. While the black and gold defenders held the Lady Cavaliers to just two points in the final eight minutes of the first half, the Lady Trojans pretty much sealed it offensively in the meantime. A nine-point frame by Chelby Jordan was the backbone for a 19-point effort by Dyersburg which game the Lady Trojans a 29-7 lead at the half.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Following a strong fourth-quarter performance, Lake County’s boys will play for a district championship for the first time since 2012 as the Falcons dominated the final eight minutes to take a 51-31 win over South Fulton at Bethel University on Friday night in McKenzie. Following a low-scoring first quarter which saw only seven points total between the two teams, South Fulton was able to pull ahead early in the second stanza. Lake County made sure the Red Devil momentum didn’t last long thanks to a pair of Jax Poole free throw to tie the game and spark an 11-2 run through the mid-to-late part of the quarter. Jay Ricks helped cap the second-frame effort by answering South Fulton scores with a pair of late buckets to give Lake County a 24-17 lead at the half.   Basketball Roundup The Tennessee Men picked up a pair of wins over unranked opponents last week but the squad is still being haunted by second half struggles. The Vols beat Mississippi State by 10 points and then rallied to down LSU by nine. Those two squads have a combined SEC record of 6-18. Vol fans are thankful that five star freshman Nate Ament has stepped up to lead and propel Tennessee to recent victories. UT will host Oklahoma  on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. before traveling to Nashville on Saturday to face Vanderbilt at 1:30. Both these games will be televised on ESPN2. Coach Kim Caldwell's Lady Vols lost a two-point heartbreaker on Sunday to Texas, a team that is projected to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Tennessee had blown Missouri out of the gym by 45 points during the midweek contest.
