Trojans advance to title game with win over Crockett County

The Cavaliers cost the Dyersburg boys the outright regular-season district crown just a few days earlier but the Trojans gained a big measure of revenge on Saturday night, handing Crockett County a 66-51 loss in the District 13-3A Semifinals at South Gibson to advance to Tuesday night’s tournament championship game.

Crockett County jumped out to an early lead, hitting its first three shots of the game to take a 6-3 lead in the opening frame. Dyersburg controlled things from there, though. Thanks to a five-point frame by Jace Ward and a three-pointer from Jayce Ellerbrook, the Trojans took a 14-9 lead at the end of the opening frame.

While the Dyersburg defense held Crockett County to just nine points through the second quarter as well, the Trojan offense added to its lead. Cam Rhines hit a three-pointer, layup and a pair of free throws to lead the way for the black and gold as Dyersburg took a 33-18 lead into the half.

Crockett County had its best quarter of the night thusfar in the third period. Six points by Andre Garduno paced the Cavaliers during their 15-point frame. Dyersburg was able to stay pretty close on the Cavs heels, as KB Parr scored five to help the Trojans take a 45-33 lead into the final frame.

From there, the Trojans were sparked by Ward and Rhines, who scored eight points each, to punch Dyersburg’s ticket to its fourth straight district championship game.

Rhines and Ward led Dyersburg with 19 points each in the semifinal win.

The Trojans will look to win their fourth straight District 13-3A Championship as Dyersburg will take on South Gibson in the title game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Medina. The two teams met in District 13-2A title games back in 2020 and 2021 with South Gibson winning both meetings.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
