Long-range goals push Trojans to senior night win over Choctaws

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports A pair of early long goals off the boot of Trojan senior Elian Gonzalez set the tone for the night as Dyersburg got a hat trick from their senior scorer on the way to a 4-0 win over Dyer County on Tuesday night in soccer action at J.C. Sawyers Stadium. After both teams had more than one chance with close shots, it took a long-range attack from over 40 yards by Gonzalez to break the scoreless tie as the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the 21 st minute. Both teams settled back into the defense, keeping the game at a one-goal differential for much of the rest of the half. Until a second long shot by Gonzalez found the net in the final minute of the half to put Dyersburg’s lead to 2-0 heading into the half. Dyer County was able to keep Dyersburg off the board for the first half of the second half while getting a couple near misses in the process. Vega Leon added to the Trojan lead in the 68 th minute with a goal in traffic the...

Dyer County softball rolls past Dyersburg

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyer County’s softball team bounced back from its late-inning loss earlier in the week and got off to a 10-run start in the top of the first, opening district play with a 24-2 win over Dyersburg at Doug French Field on Thursday night. The Choctaw offense was in control from the get-go. Kierstyn Ray was hit by a pitch then moved up a base on a Katie Beth Caldwell single. Emma Wray reached safely on a fielder’s choice then Rylee Key drew a bases-loaded walk to put Dyer County on the board. Molly Kate Woody singled in two then Key scored on a passed ball. Wood also scored on a passed ball moments later. Two batters later, Ray cleared the bases with an inside-the-park grand slam to put Dyer County up by nine before a Key doubled gave the Choctaws a 10-0 lead after one. The Lady Trojans looked to answer in their half of the first. Avery Hicks singled with one out then Lilly Kate Jones followed two batters later with a single to pu...

Choctaw rally comes up short in loss to USJ

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Trailing by three heading into the final half inning, Dyer County softball kept things interesting up until the last pitch, scoring two before falling just short in a 5-4 loss to the University School of Jackson on Tuesday evening in Newbern. The Lady Bruins took a two-run lead into the top of the seventh, adding to it with an RBI double from  Emerson Fair to push the USJ advantage to 5-2 heading into the final half inning. The Choctaws went to work right off the bat in the bottom of the seventh, getting the No. 9 hitter Kate Benedetto on with a walk then Keirstyn Ray joined her on the bases with a single. Katie Beth Caldwell doubled to center to score a run then Emma Wray hit a sacrifice fly to plate another and cut the USJ lead to a lone run. But, a pair of strikeouts ended the Dyer County threat with the tying run at third base. The Lady Bruin jumped out to a four-run lead with a pair of runs in the top of the secon...

Trojans avenge loss with big inning of their own

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Four runs in an inning turned into a trend in the Dyersburg-Dyer County home-and-home District 13-3A series as the Trojans avenged their loss on a Monday night in a similar fashion to how Dyer County topped them with a 5-2 win over the Choctaws in Newbern on Tuesday night. After a scoreless one and a half innings, Dyer County was the first to get on the board in the bottom of the second frame. Landon Daniels was hit by a pitch then Weston Sims reached on an error. Following a sacrifice bunt by Jake Stanley, Bennett Black grounded out to second base to score Daniels and give Dyer County a 1-0 lead after two innings. Dyersburg’s answer was quick and decisive. In a déjà vu moment, the inning started with Evan Thompson getting hit by a pitch then JP Noblin reaching on an error. Alex Page doubled in a run then Will Leonard tripled in two more to give the Trojans a lead. Ryan Wesson added to the lead with an RBI single to put Dyers...

Dyer County equaled their scoring through six frames in one inning to set the tone for the seventh frame. Lake County scores late, holds on to beat Gleason

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Lake County softball team closed out its week and went into spring break on a win on Friday evening as the Lady Falcons scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth then held off a Gleason rally in the top of the seventh to win 4-3 in District 14A action in Tiptonville. Lake County got on the board in the bottom of the first as a Bryleigh Walls one-out RBI single plated Aaliyah Shell to put the Lady Falcons on top 1-0. Gleason was able to get on the board and tie the game in the top of the third. Leadoff batter Ava Bennett was hit by a pitch then advanced to third on two passed balls during the following two batters. Zoe Healy drove her in with a single to center to tie the game at 1-0 after two and a half innings. The Lady Falcons answered quickly in the bottom of the third. A one-out walk by Mailee Hicks and a Kaitlyn Jones single put two Lake County players on for Walls. The Lady Falcons’ pitcher helped her own...
