Big inning propels Dyer County past Dyersburg

With both teams playing well through the opening weeks of the season in non-district action, the Choctaws and Trojans opened District 13-3A play on Monday night at Tom Mathis Field as Dyer County utilized a four-run seventh inning to take an 8-4 win over the Trojans.

Dyer County equaled their scoring through six frames in one inning to set the tone for the seventh frame. Easton Ozment drew a walk then Talon Messer doubled to put two on in scoring position with no one out. Jake Jone followed with a two-run single to give the Choctaws their first lead since the top of the first. Landon Daniels reached on an error then scored later in the inning on a Brax Anderson single along with Landon Todd to give Dyer County an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

In the bottom of the frame, Dyersburg managed only a one-out double by Alex Page before the Choctaws retired the next two batters to secure the win.

The Choctaws got on the board first, scoring in the top of the opening inning with a two-out Landon Daniels single to give Dyer County an early 1-0 lead after a half inning.

Dyersburg was quick to answer in the bottom of the frame. JP Noblin singled with one out then Alex Page followed with a base hit as well. Will Leonard singled home a run to tie the game then Ryan Wesson singled in two more to put the Trojans ahead 3-1 after an inning.

Dyer County went to the long ball in the top of the third as Talon Messer sent a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to cut the Dyersburg lead to 3-2 heading into the bottom of the third.

Much like the first inning, the Trojans struck back in their half of the third. On a pickoff play which netted the Choctaws and out, Noblin scored from their to push the Dyersburg lead to 4-2 after three innings.

The Choctaws wasted little time cutting into Dyersburg’s lead. Weston Sims led off the top of the fourth with a single then scored two batters later on a Ty Johnson single to cut the Trojan lead to 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Dyer County then tied the game in the top of the fifth when Jake Jone scored on an error to make it a 4-4 game through four and a half frames.

Messer led the way for the Choctaws with a double and a homer, driving in one while Daniels had a pair of singles and an RBI.

Page paced Dyersburg a double and two singles while Noblin added two singles as well.

Jake Wenzler picked up the win in relief, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out three in the final three innings of work. Jake Stanley got the no-decision, allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts.

Wesson took the loss in relief for the Trojans, pitching the final 1.2 innings.

Dyersburg and Dyer County return to action on Tuesday when the home-and-home series shifts to Newbern at 7 p.m.
