Trojans avenge loss with big inning of their own

Four runs in an inning turned into a trend in the Dyersburg-Dyer County home-and-home District 13-3A series as the Trojans avenged their loss on a Monday night in a similar fashion to how Dyer County topped them with a 5-2 win over the Choctaws in Newbern on Tuesday night.


After a scoreless one and a half innings, Dyer County was the first to get on the board in the bottom of the second frame. Landon Daniels was hit by a pitch then Weston Sims reached on an error. Following a sacrifice bunt by Jake Stanley, Bennett Black grounded out to second base to score Daniels and give Dyer County a 1-0 lead after two innings.

Dyersburg’s answer was quick and decisive. In a déjà vu moment, the inning started with Evan Thompson getting hit by a pitch then JP Noblin reaching on an error. Alex Page doubled in a run then Will Leonard tripled in two more to give the Trojans a lead. Ryan Wesson added to the lead with an RBI single to put Dyersburg on top 4-1 after the top of the third.

The Choctaws got back on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Sims drew a walk. In a replay of Dyer County’s first run, Black grounded out to second two batters later to plate Landon Todd (Sims’ courtesy runner) and cut the Dyersburg lead by one. After a Ty Johnson single, Dyersburg was able to get a grounder to end the frame with a 4-2 lead after four innings.


Trojan pitcher Noblin helped his cause in the top of the fifth, doubling in a run to extend the Dyersburg lead to 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.


From there, Noblin and the Trojan defense retired nine of the final ten Choctaw batters to secure the win.

Noblin went the distance for the Trojans, allowing two runs on three hits (all singles) while striking out four in the win. Ozment took the loss, going 4.2 innings while allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Leonard had a triple and a single with two RBI in the win.

The Trojans head to USA Stadium in Millington on Thursday as the Trojans take on Tipton Christian Academy at 6:30 p.m. Dyer County returns to action on Friday when the Choctaws travel to Graves County at 6:30 p.m.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
