Choctaw rally comes up short in loss to USJ

Trailing by three heading into the final half inning, Dyer County softball kept things interesting up until the last pitch, scoring two before falling just short in a 5-4 loss to the University School of Jackson on Tuesday evening in Newbern.

The Lady Bruins took a two-run lead into the top of the seventh, adding to it with an RBI double from  Emerson Fair to push the USJ advantage to 5-2 heading into the final half inning.


The Choctaws went to work right off the bat in the bottom of the seventh, getting the No. 9 hitter Kate Benedetto on with a walk then Keirstyn Ray joined her on the bases with a single. Katie Beth Caldwell doubled to center to score a run then Emma Wray hit a sacrifice fly to plate another and cut the USJ lead to a lone run. But, a pair of strikeouts ended the Dyer County threat with the tying run at third base.

The Lady Bruin jumped out to a four-run lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second and third innings.

The Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the third. Ray singled with two outs then scored on a Caldwell double to cut the Lady Bruin lead to 4-1 after three innings.

Rylee Key got Dyer County even closer to catching USJ in the bottom of the sixth, leading off the frame with a solo home run to cut the Lady Bruin advantage to 4-2 after six innings.

Caldwell had a pair of doubles and two RBI to lead the way for Dyer County while Ray added a pair of singles.

Molly Kate Woody took the loss for the Choctaws, allowing four runs on six hits in two innings of work.

Dyer County returns to the field on Thursday when the Choctaws open District 13-3A play as the orange and white travel to Dyersburg to take on the Lady Trojans at 7 p.m.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
