Bonus Coverage: Gleason holds off Dresden to advance to title game

Despite a very strong start by Gleason to open the District 14-A Semifinal on Friday night at Bethel University in McKenzie, Dresden battled back and made it interesting late before the Bulldogs claimed a 49-40 win over the Lions.

Two three-pointers by Drake Lehmkuhl as well as single treys by Cade Sawyers and Parker Morgan were the highlights of a 16-0 run by Gleason to start the game which helped the Bulldogs take an 18-4 lead after one.


Gleason’s lead swelled to 23-6 early in the second frame after a Sawyers bucket. Dresden began its climb back into contention with a quick 6-0 run capped by a bucket by Landon Floyd. Gleason answered with tallies from Brock Dilday and Sanders while Dresden got buckets from Jacoby Sutton and Cannon Floyd to trail 29-16 heading into the half.

After a Lehmkuhl three-pointer to start the second half for Gleason, Dresden rallied with three Landon Cantrell free throws and a three-pointer by Grey Forrester to bookend an 8-0 run and cut the Bulldog lead in half. Gleason built its lead back to 14 after a Miami Woolridge bucket. But, the Lions ended the frame strong with a 9-0 run capped by a Aiden Flora three-pointer at the buzzer to cut Gleason’s lead to 38-33 at the end of three quarters.

Sanders opened the fourth quarter for Gleason with a bucket but the Lions answered with buckets from Cannon and Landon Floyd to cut the Bulldog’s lead to three points with about 5:30 left in the game. But, Gleason’s offense was able to maintain control of the ball while stopping Dresden on offense as the Lions scored nine straight end the threat and seal the semifinal win.

Lehmkuhl led the way for Gleason with 17 points while Sawyers scored a dozen in the win.

Sutton paced Dresden with 12 points while the Cannon and Landon Floyd each added eight in the loss.

Gleason will take on Lake County in the District 14-A Championship Game at 7:30 p.m. on Monday night. Earlier in the night, Dresden will face South Fulton in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
