Lake County pulls away to advance to title game

Following a strong fourth-quarter performance, Lake County’s boys will play for a district championship for the first time since 2012 as the Falcons dominated the final eight minutes to take a 51-31 win over South Fulton at Bethel University on Friday night in McKenzie.


Following a low-scoring first quarter which saw only seven points total between the two teams, South Fulton was able to pull ahead early in the second stanza. Lake County made sure the Red Devil momentum didn’t last long thanks to a pair of Jax Poole free throw to tie the game and spark an 11-2 run through the mid-to-late part of the quarter. Jay Ricks helped cap the second-frame effort by answering South Fulton scores with a pair of late buckets to give Lake County a 24-17 lead at the half.

Lake County was able to build its lead to double digits during the third frame after a three-point play by Ricks. South Fulton battled back and cut the Falcon lead back to seven by the end of the frame as Lake County took a 34-27 lead into the final frame.

Seeing their chance to play for a first district championship in 14 seasons, the Falcons surged out in the final frame. Led by nine points by Poole over the final eight minutes, the green and gold outscored South Fulton 17-4 in the fourth quarter which included a 10-0 run to start the period.

Poole led the way for Lake County with 22 points while Ricks added 13. Mark Owens tossed in 10 in the win.

Lake County will take on Gleason in the District 14-A Championship Game on Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at Bethel University in McKenzie.
