Lady Trojans fall to South Gibson in district championship

After two unsuccessful tries to wrest the District 13-3A crown from Dyersburg, South Gibson finally took the spot on the top of the podium as the Lady Hornet defense stifled the Lady Trojans for a 40-23 win in Medina on Monday night in the District 13-3A Tournament Championship Game.


The Lady Hornet defense kept Dyersburg off the board early, allowing only a bucket apiece to Chelby Jordan and Kaliyah Lewis while jumping out to a 16-4 lead on the offensive side. Jordan broke the scoring spree with a three-pointer as Dyersburg was able to cut it to six after ending the frame strong. The Lady Trojan trailed 17-11 heading into the second quarter.

An early Jordan bucket was the only offense Dyersburg managed in the final eight minutes of the first half. The Lady Hornets ended the half on a 10-0 run to take a 27-13 lead at the break.

With the Lady Trojans continuing to struggle shooting the ball, a 7-2 run through the midway point of the third quarter helped the Lady Hornets to take a 34-19 lead into the final frame.

Dyersburg was able to get buckets from Lewis and Jordan early in the fourth quarter as well as some steals. But, shooting woes for the Lady Trojans and ball control and defense by the Lady Hornets doomed the black and gold as South Gibson took the win and the district championship to end Dyersburg’s two-year reign atop District 13-3A.

Jordan led the way for Dyersburg with 15 points while Lewis added eight. The two players combined to shoot 10-for-17. The rest of the team was held scoreless, shooting 0-for-20 resulting in a 27-percent shooting night from the field.


Dyersburg will host the quarterfinal of the Region 7-3A Tournament on Friday night at 7 p.m. with the Lady Trojans facing Hardin County.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
