Lady Trojans open postseason with big win

After early-week storms brought a premature end to the regular season, Dyersburg got its softball postseason off to a successful start on Wednesday night in Alamo with a 15-0 win over Haywood in the opening round of the District 13-3A Tournament.

In the first-round victory, Lady Trojan senior Izzie Odow faced one over the minimum on the way to holding the Lady Tomcats hitless over the three-inning, no-hit win, striking out five along the way.

To say Dyersburg set the tone early is an understatement. After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Lady Trojan offense erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning. Chelby Jordan singled to lead off the frame then Lily Kate Jones reached on an error two batters later to plate her senior teammate. Odom helped her own cause with a two-run triple then Murphy Morgan tripled to plate another run. Mallory McCaslin singled in a run as did Kyleigh Littles. Bella Turnage followed with a single then Jai Cobb drew a walk to load the bases. Jordan singled in two more runs then Jones plated another with a base hit. Odom added a two-run double later in the inning to extend the Dyersburg lead to 11-0 after one inning.

The only baserunner the Tomcats had in the game came with one out in the top of the second on a hit batter. Odom got the next batter to pop out then struck out the following hitter to get out of the inning.

A trio of singles mixed around a couple of outs led to a two-run single from Avery Hicks in the bottom of the second. Jones reached on an error for the second time in the evening which allowed Hicks to score. Odom doubled again to plate a run and put her team up 15-0 heading into the third inning.

The Lady Trojans retired the side in the third to secure the win and advance to the winner’s bracket quarterfinal on Thursday.

Odom had two doubles and a triple as part of a 3-for-3 evening, driving in five. Jordan added a trio of singles with two RBI in the win. Morgan had a triple and a single while Turnage had two singles.

Dyersburg will face Dyer County at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening at Crockett County High School in Alamo in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket of the District 13-3A Tournament.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
