Choctaws open postseason with win over Haywood

Opening the postseason on the road for the first time since the TSSAA went to four classes, Dyer County made short work of the Tomcats, taking a 10-0 win over Haywood on Wednesday in the opening round of the District 13-3A Tournament in Alamo.

Dyer County got on the board early with four runs in the bottom of the first. Talon Messer tripled in two to get things going for the Tribe as an Easton Ozment groundout later in the inning plated another after a balk plated a run. The Choctaws took a 4-0 lead after one inning.

The Choctaws added to their lead in the bottom of the second on a single from Jake Wenzler to go up 5-0 after two frames.

Dyer County tacked on two more two innings later. Daniels grounded out to third which allowed Bennett Black to score. Later in the frame, Messer singled in a run to put the orange and white on top 7-0 heading into the fifth inning.

The Choctaws put the game away in the fifth. Jake Stanley singled in a run then Daniels drew a bases-loaded walk to put Dyer County on top by nine. Wenzler grounded into a fielder’s choice which plated Carson Cogdill to put Dyer County on top 10-0 and bring the mercy rule into play.

Cogdill went the distance for the Choctaws, allowing no runs on three hits with six strikeouts in the victory, using 67 pitches to get the win.

Messer led the way for the Choctaws with a triple and a single with three RBI while Daniels and Wenzler had two singles each with two RBI as well.

Dyer County takes on South Gibson in the quarterfinals of the District 13-3A Tournament winner’s bracket on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
