Crockett County slips past Dyersburg with late goal

With the postseason approaching and the end of the regular
season coming up, Dyersburg’s soccer team battled through a back-and-forth match
with Crockett County before falling 6-5 to the Cavaliers on Friday evening at
J.C. Sawyers Stadium.
After a scoreless ten minutes to open the game, Dyersburg got on the board with a long-distance goal from Trojan senior Elian Gonzalez in the 12th minute to put the black and gold on top 1-0.
The Crockett County answers were quick. The Cavaliers got
goals in the 12th and 14th minutes to take a 2-1 lead.
The Cavalier lead didn’t last very long as Dyersburg got a
goal from Isaac Zamzow to tie the game at 2-2 in the 25th minute.
Crockett County had an answer for this goal as well, getting
their response in the 29th minute to take a 3-2 lead.
It was Dyersburg’s turn for a quick response and the Trojans
got it in the form of a Hudson Ford goal to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the
final ten minutes of the first half.
While the Trojans were able to keep the Cavaliers from
answering for much of the final part of the first half, Crockett County got a
goal in the 39th minute to take a 4-3 lead at the break.
Much like the first half, it took ten minutes to get the
scoring started. And, like the first half, the second half tallies began with a
Trojan goal as Vega E. Leon scored to tie the game at 4-4 in the 50th
minute.
Crockett County answered four minutes later to retake the
lead at 5-4 in the 54th minute.
Dyersburg tied the game later in the half thanks to a
penalty in the box by Crockett County. Elian Gonzalez hit the ensuing penalty
kick in the 65th minute to knot the score up at 5-5.
However, as they had done all evening, the Cavaliers had an answer,
retaking the lead in with a goal in the 69th minute to go up 6-5
with just over ten minutes left.
Dyersburg battled through the final horn but the Trojans
were unable to get the game-tying goal as Crockett County escaped with the win.
The Trojans return to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when Dyersburg
hosts South Gibson in the regular season district finale at J.C. Sawyers Stadium.
