Cavaliers overtake Trojans in District 13-3A Quarterfinals

Dyersburg was able to get out in front with a big first inning, but Crockett County was able to chip away and take the lead before having to hold off a seventh-inning Trojan rally to take the District 13-3A Tournament Quarterfinal 7-6 on Thursday evening in Alamo.

The Trojans caught a break early on as Evan Thompson reached on an error when a popup was misplayed. Dyersburg took advantage two plays later when Alex Page homered to left to put the black and gold on top by two. A pair of walks were followed by a Brett Horner grounder to third which allowed Ryan Wesson to score. Ethan Austin then reached on an error to plate a run and put Dyersburg on top 4-0 after a half inning.

But, back-to-back home runs from Callan Willis and Brady Fronabarger in a span of four pitches cut Dyersburg’s lead in half to 4-2 after one inning.


Crockett County crept closer in the second with a Carter Winders RBI single to cut the Dyersburg lead to 4-3 after two frames.

After tying the game in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly, Crockett County pulled ahead with a Winders two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to put the Cavaliers on top 6-4 after four innings.

Dyersburg was able to get one of those runs back in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Alex Page to cut the Crockett County lead to 6-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Crockett County got what turned into an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an Aiden Austin lineout which scored a run to put the Cavaliers on top 7-5 heading into the top of the seventh.

Dyersburg did more than threaten in the final frame as the Trojans rallied with one out as JP Noblin and Page singled then Will Leonard drew a walk to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice, Brett Horner singled in a run to cut the lead to one with two outs. But, a strikeout ended the game as top-seeded Crockett County escaped with the win.

Page went 3-for-3 with two singles and a home run with three RBI in the loss.

Dyersburg will return to action on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in consolation bracket action in the District 13-3A Tournament against Haywood.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
