With runs and its coming at a premium in morning action at
the TSSAA Class 3A State Tournament Opening Round Game between Dyer County, the
Lady Devils struck early then added another two innings later and held on to
hand the Choctaws a 3-0 opening round loss on Wednesday morning.
Unicoi County allowed only a two-out walk to Rylee Key then
got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first. Engle doubled to lead off
the bottom of the frame then Byrd followed with a long home run two batters
later to put the Lady Devils on top 2-0 after one inning.
Neither team was able to get a hit until the bottom of the
third inning when the Lady Devils cashed in again. A hit batter and a walk were
followed by a single from Woodward to load the bases. Dyer County’s Molly Kate Woody
struck out the next batter then a grounder to third resulted in an out at the
plate. The Choctaws looked to turn two but the throw was low and went into
right field allowing Engle to score and put Unicoi County on top 3-0 after
three innings.
Emma Wray broke up Byrd’s no-hit bid with a one-out single
in the fourth, and Allie Ables was hit by a pitch to put two on with two out. But,
Byrd struck out the next batter to get out of the inning with the lead intact.
Woody and the Choctaw defense worked around a one-out single in the fourth and a one-out double in the fifth to keep the Choctaws within striking distance. But, in both half innings that followed, Dyer County was retired in order to send the game to the bottom of the sixth.
Woody and the defense then put together a 1-2-3 inning to
send the game to the seventh. The Choctaws managed only a one-out single from
Ables in the frame as Unicoi County held on for the win.
Dyer County was held just singles from Wray and Ables.
Woody took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits with
five strikeouts.
The Choctaws return to the field at 3 p.m. when they will take on McNairy Central in an elimination game. The two teams faced each other on March 10 in Newbern with the Lady Bobcats winning 6-2.
