After being held scoreless through the first half by an
improved and stingy Dyer County defense, the Lady Trojans were finally able to
break through onto the scoreboard in the second half with five goals including
four in the final 20 minutes to take a 5-0 win over the Lady Choctaws on Thursday
night at J.C. Sawyers Stadium in Dyersburg.
Both teams had chances in the opening half but Dyer County was able to apply pressure to the Dyersburg defense. Though the orange and white did not score during the first 40 minutes of action, the Lady Choctaws kept the black and gold on their heels through much of the half. Dyersburg goalkeeper Grace Ann Webb was able to keep the ball from going into the goal to help the Lady Trojan defense preserve the shutout.
Meanwhile, Dyersburg was also able to apply pressure at times during the opening half of action. The Lady Trojans had some chances to score but saves from Major Peevyhouse of Dyer County led to a scoreless tie at the break.
Dyersburg was finally able to break through in the second
half as Haddy Manneh finally got one into the net in the 46th minute
to take a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the half.
Dyer County looked to grab some momentum back later in the
half as a Dyersburg player was red-carded, putting the Lady Trojans at a disadvantage
of one player for the rest of the game with about 20 minutes left to play.
But, Dyersburg’s standout senior Kathleen Harrell provided some insurance in the 61st minute with a goal to put the Lady Trojans on top 2-0.
The Lady Trojan rally continued with a goal each in the next
two minutes as Manneh and Harrell each tacked on a goal to double the Dyersburg
lead by the 63rd minute.
Manneh closed out the scoring and her hat trick with a goal
in the 68th minute to give her team a 5-0 lead.
Dyersburg returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 2 as the Lady Trojans travel to Henry County in non-district action. Meanwhile, Dyer County heads back on the road and on the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 2 when the Lady Choctaws travel to South Gibson to take on the Lady Hornets at 6 p.m. in Medina.
