Dyer County rolls past Union City, remains unbeaten

After a thrilling overtime victory against the Dyersburg Trojans last week, the Choctaws looked to keep the momentum going on the road against Head Coach Justin Dubriel’s former team, the Union City Golden Tornadoes. The Choctaws were able to capitalize on early mistakes to take the victory on the road 34-14.
The Choctaws won the coin toss and elected to receive, and Antonio Franklin took the opening kick to the Union City 33-yard line. Dyer County got into a third and 4, which was a no gain on a Landon Daniels run. On 4th down, Daniels hit Franklin for a first down at the Union City 19. Two plays later on third and 9, a toss to Korey Taylor gained five and Dyer County gained the first via penalty. On fourth and goal, a pass from Daniels to Ke'Anthony Barbee resulted in a Choctaws touchdown. The Extra Point by Jotham Powell was good, making the score 7-0 Dyer County.
The Golden Tornadoes took the ensuing kickoff to their own 35. A fumble on the first play of the drive was recovered by Ty Johnson, with the Choctaws taking over at the Union City 46. A sack on third and 13 forced a Choctaw punt, with Union City taking over at their own 4-yard line. A long drive that saw the Golden Tornadoes pick up four first down in eight plays before the first quarter expired.
To start the second, a Jack Theobald pass was intercepted by Barbee on 3rd and 10 at the Choctaws 30-yard line, which had a 22-yard return. Four plays later on third and 4, a Daniels pass to Grant West was broken up, but the drive was extended via penalty. The next play saw Daniels pass to West again, this time for 16 yards and the score. The extra point was good, which made the score 14-0 Choctaws.The Golden Tornadoes started their next drive on their own 35-yard line. They ran 6 straight run plays to get down to the Choctaws 4-yard line. On third and 2, a Theobald run picked up just enough for a first down at the Dyer County 2. The Choctaws defense forced a third and goal from the 3, where Theobald ran it in for a touchdown. The extra point by Alex Landeros was good, which made the score 14-7 Choctaws.
Devin Hayward took the ensuing kickoff to the Choctaws 45-yard line with 1:27 to go in the half. A pass-heavy drive saw the Choctaws' offense get to the UC 24 with 32 seconds left in the half. A Daniels pass to Barbee on 2nd and 7 got the Choctaws offense down to the Golden Tornadoes 2-yard line. On the next play, Taylor took a handoff the rest of the way for a Choctaws score. The Powell extra point was good, 21-7 Dyer County.
Union City got the ball at their own 38 with under 15 seconds remaining. The Golden Tornadoes fumbled on the first play of the drive and it was recovered by Luke Bryant with 5 seconds left in the half at the Union City 40 yard-line. Daniels took a deep shot to West to end the half, which resulted in a Dyer County touchdown. The extra point was good, making the score 28-7 in favor of Dyer County as the first half expired.
Union City got the ball to start the second half at their own 34-yard line, and Adrian Crawford ran the first play all the way for a Golden Tornadoes touchdown. The extra point was good, which made the score 28-14, Choctaws.
Dyer County got the ball on their own 45 to start the next drive. On third and 4 from the UC 49, a Taylor run picked up five yards for a first down. Choctaws then got into a fourth and 3 from the Union City 25 but failed to convert. The Choctaws defense then forced Union City into a third and 11 which saw Theobald pick up seven to make it fourth and 4, and then the Choctaws defense stuffed Theobald in the backfield for a turnover on downs. On second and 13, a pass from Daniels to Barbee got the Choctaws down to the Golden Tornado 12-yard line. Then on fourth and 2 from the 4, a handoff to Barbee got Dyer County to the 1-yard line. The next play, a hand off to Bryce Fulton scored for the Choctaws. The extra point was blocked, which extended the Dyer County lead 34-14.The Golden Tornadoes got the kickoff to their own 43-yard line. On third and 1 from the Choctaws 48, a Theobald run got down to the Choctaws 25. Two plays later, the Tornadoes got down to the Choctaws 12 before the third quarter expired. On 3rd and 11, a Union City fumble was recovered by Maddox Moore at the Choctaws 19. The first play of the drive was a 12-yard Fulton rush. Dyer County would then lose yardage and punt on fourth and 17. Union City took over at their own 25 and went 3 and out, giving the ball back to Dyer County on their own 47. A Daniels run on second and 8 kept the drive alive and allowed the Choctaws to run out the remaining time to secure the 34-14 victory.
The Choctaws will be back in Newbern next week to face the Hardin County Tigers on Friday, Sept. 5. Kickoff will be at 7 pm.
