Though Union City holds a lead in the overall series between
Dyer County and the Tornadoes, the Choctaws (1-0) will look to make another
dent in the deficit when the orange and white travel to Union City in Week 2
action.
Coming out of a one-point win over the Trojans last Friday
night in Dyersburg, Dyer County Head Coach Justin Dubriuel said the Choctaws beat
a good team in the season opener. Still, the first-year head coach is keeping
things in perspective.
“But we can’t be satisfied with just being 1-0 or just
beating Dyersburg,” Dubruiel said. “We have to continue to get better each
week.”
Dubruiel talked about where the Tornadoes concern him on offense.
“Offensively, they don’t do a lot but what they do they are
good at,” Dubruiel said. “The QB is a kid who is tough as nails.”
Dubruiel pointed to the need for a big night from the entire
Dyer County defense.
“Defensively, we need a big game from everyone,” the Choctaw
head coach said. “We have to play assignment football or one wrong key and one
wrong read could mean bad things for us.”
On the other side of the ball, the Union City defense’s
speed is a concern for Dubruiel.
“Defensively, they are quick to the ball with good tacklers,”
Dubruiel added.
Dubruiel pointed to the guys up front as the players he
needs a big game from on the offensive side of the ball.
“Offensively, I would like to be able have a big game from
our offensive line,” the Choctaw head coach said. “We weren’t able to get the
run game established against Dyersburg, and I want those guys to be able to set
the tone for the game.”
The Choctaws are, historically, 1-8 against Union City,
where Dubruiel spent the 2013-2018 seasons. He was part of three state championship
teams.
“It’s always a good game day experience at Union City and I
expect nothing less,” Dubruiel said. “I still have friends that I keep up with,
and they keep up with me. So it will be fun.
“Currently 1-1 against them as an assistant and would like
to get the edge on them as the head coach.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday night at Union City.
