After a tough loss in last week’s season opener, the Trojans bounced back in Week 2 on Friday night to defeat Brighton 36-27 at J.C. Sawyers Stadium in Dyersburg.
The Trojans wasted little time getting on the board as
Dyersburg scored on the first drive of the game. The first possession was
capped by a direct-snap run to Peyton Hill for a 22-yard touchdown run. The gutsy
playcall was made on a fourth-and-6 play. Elian Gonzalez added the extra point
to put the black and gold on top 7-0 with 7:20 left in the first quarter.
Brighton had an answer though, scoring on its first possession
to tie the game at 7-7.
Dyersburg drove the ball down the field on its next
possession and capped the drive with another Hill touchdown. This one was from
three yards out on second-and-goal. The two-point conversion by Hill put
Dyersburg on top 15-7 with 10:05 left in the first half.
After a pair of stops by JP Noblin – a tackle for loss then
a sack, Brighton was forced to punt which didn’t go well for the Cardinals and
gave the Trojans the ball at the Brighton 29-yard line.
The Trojans put together a quick drive to get into the end
zone with a Logston Morgan 10-yard keeper with 5:02 left in the half. Gonzalez
added the extra point to go up 22-7.
Though Brighton was able to get to a first-and-goal
situation, the Trojan defense stepped up as Isaiah Thomas came up with a sack.
Thomas then teamed up with Noblin for a tackle for loss before the next
Cardinal ball carrier was ran out of bounds by Kendrick Gourley. A holding
penalty on fourth down was declined after Brighton failed to get into the end
zone as Dyersburg took its lead to the break.
The Trojans added to their lead in the third quarter as
Morgan hit Gourley for a 38-yard touchdown pass. The extra point put Dyersburg
on top 29-7 with 4:38 left in the third quarter.
Brighton scored on its next possession to cut into the Dyersburg
lead but Santavion Williams blocked the extra point to keep the Trojan
advantage at 29-13.
Dyersburg was able to get a quick touchdown on the first
play of the ensuing Trojan drive. Quincy Terry scored on a 47-yard run to extend
the Trojan lead. Dyersburg got another Gonzalez extra point to take a 36-13
lead with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.
Brighton was able to tack on a couple touchdowns against the
Dyersburg reserves to account for the final score.
The Trojans, after opening the season at home, will be on
the road next week as Dyersburg travels to Camden Central at 7 p.m. next
Friday.
