With outright control of first place on the line Tuesday
night in Newbern, the Dyer County volleyball team battled through a tough first
set then took control over the final two frames to defeat Crockett County in
three sets.
The win clinches the Choctaws’ fifth straight regular season
district championship. Along with the 2025 District 13AA Regular Season
Championship, Dyer County will host next week’s district tournament for the
fifth straight season.
Despite the Lady Cavaliers taking a 2-0 lead early in the opening set, the Choctaws stormed back with kills from Rylee Key, Katie Beth Caldwell and Emma Wray to take a 5-3 lead. A block and an ace from Key helped Dyer County to a 7-4 advantage and an ace by Evie Rogers put the Choctaws up 13-8. Crockett County battled back to tie the game at 16-16 to set up a battle down the stretch between the two teams which saw multiple lead changes.
Dyer County tied the game with kills from Blair Acree and
Key then took the lead when the senior frontline hitter put up an ace to get
the Choctaws to set point. A double-hit was called on Crockett County on the next
volley to seal the 25-23 win in the opening set.
The Choctaws carried that momentum into the second set as
Dyer County jumped out to a 4-0 lead early. A Caldwell kill helped build the
lead to 11-6 then an Acree block pushed the Dyer County advantage to 12-7. The
Lady Cavaliers battled back again, this time cutting the lead to 14-12. The Choctaws
fought off the rally, getting a block from Erin Foster and a kill by Key to
take a 25-19 win in the second set.
The third set went back and forth early on before Dyer County
began to pull away following back-to-back kills from Key. Another kill by Kill
pushed the Choctaw lead to 21-12 and that was followed by a Caldwell ace to
take a 22-12 lead. An Acree kill put Dyer County at match point and, after a
short rally by the Lady Cavs, the Lady Choctaws picked up the final point to
clinch a 25-16 win and the district title via the sweep.
Dyer County returns to action on Thursday when the Choctaws host South Side with Senior Night festivities beginning at 5:45 p.m. in Newbern.
