Dyer County upsets District 14-3A champion to survive in region tournament

  JP Productions Sports With the season on the line and a spot in the region semifinals up for grabs, the Lady Choctaws’ turned to their three seniors who combined to score 51 points during Dyer County’s 68-56 win over Haywood in Brownsville on Friday night. Dyer County entered the game as the No. 4 seed coming out of District 13-3A while the Lady Tomcats were the District 14-3-A Champions. In a pretty high-scoring opening quarter, Dyer County was able to stay ahead of Haywood’s scoring pace thanks their senior trio. Tykeria Kennedy scored eight while Alijah Robinson tossed in four to go along with a four-point frame by Anitra Honore to take a 24-20 lead after one quarter. Dyer County’s defense held the Lady Tomcats to a trio of three-pointers in the second quarter. Dyersburg cages Lady Wildcats in region quarterfinal blowout

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyersburg, the defending Class 3A State Champions entered the second tier of the postseason as heavy favorites over Bolton and took care of business in the quarterfinals of the Region 7-3A Tournament with an 80-21 win over the Lady Wildcats on Friday night in the Terry Glover Gymnasium. Dyersburg put the game out of reach early, getting three-pointers from Kay Kay Strayhorn and Chelby Jordan along with a pair of free throws by Joya Crawford to spark a 21-0 to open the game. After the Lady Wildcats finally got on the board with a three-pointer, Dyersburg ended the first quarter with a trey by Bree Parr to open a 14-0 run to end the frame and take a 35-3 at the end of one. The Lady Trojans’ dominance continued into the second quarter. Led by a nine-point frame by Aerie Quinn Dyersburg built a 54-6 lead at the break. Dyersburg State dominates doubleheader against Pellissippi

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Coming off a start of the week which saw the Lady Eagles drop four games in two days at home, the Dyersburg State softball team began to bounce back on Friday as the DSCC girls took a doubleheader in convincing fashion from new conference foe Pellissippi State on Friday afternoon. Dyersburg State took the first game of the day, 10-2, via the eight-run mercy rule over PSCC. The Lady Eagle scoring continued into the second game with a 12-2 win over Pellissippi State. Game 1: Dyersburg State 10, Pellissippi State 2 Behind a four-hit performance by Jada Moore, the Leady Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit during the bottom of the third to score nine straight and take the opening game by eight runs. With one out in the bottom of the third, Moore singled to get the DSCC offense going then scored on a Chloe Jones triple to tie the game. Madyson Lanier singled in Jones then Chanley Price singled another run home for the Lady Eagles...

The Dyersburg Trojans show off the District 13-3A Championship hardware following their 731-51 win over Dyer County in the district championship game on Thursday night in Newbern. The title game win was the team's third straight district championship victory. Five Dyersburg Trojan players received District 13-3A individual honors following the championship game on Thursday. Dyersburg pulls away from Choctaws in fourth to secure three-peat

  Jason Peevyhouse JP Productions Sports After taking a lead early on, the Trojans gradually built their advantage of the following three quarters to secure the team’s third straight District 13-3A Championship with a 73-51 win over Dyer County in the tournament title game on Thursday night in Newbern, A back-and-forth opening quarter saw a pair of Devin Hayward free throws give the Choctaws a brief lead before Dyersburg went on a 5-5 run capped by a Jace Ward bucket to take an 8-6 lead. Both teams swapped buckets through the rest of the half as the Trojans took a 12-9 lead following a late AJ Higgins bucket. A bucket from Jamin Gauldin and a three-pointer from Clay Dodds put Dyer County up two points early in the second quarter. Dyersburg answered with a jumper and a three-pointer by Treyvon Smiles to spark an 8-0 run capped by a three-point play by Jace Ward.   Staff Complete, Spring Practice Set Tennessee head football coach Josh Heupel completed his staff last week with three additions and two contract extensions. The only member of the staff to depart was special teams coach Mike Ekeler who left to return to his home state of Nebraska to join the Cornhuskers. Heupel promoted analyst Levorn "Chop" Harbin to replace Ekler as the outside linebacker's coach. Another former analyst, Evan Crabtree, will serve as special teams coordinator and veteran NFL special teams coach John Bonamego is a full time staff member as assistant special teams coach. Defensive backs coach Willie Martinez and Director of Competitive Development, Kurt Schmidt earned contract extensions. Martinez got two years added to his deal and Schmidt received a one-year extension. Schmidt's title is a fancy name for what has been known for years as the Strength and Conditioning coach. Some of the other holdover members of the staff got pay increases this year...

  Thanks to their 32-31 win over South Gibson in the District 13-3A Tournament Championship Game on Wednesday night in Newbern, the Lady Choctaws have won the district tournament for the second straight season. Following the District 13-3A Championship Game on Wednesday night at Dyer County High School, four Dyersburg players received district individual honors. Lady Trojans honored were (from left) Chelby Jordan (All-District, All-Tournament); Kalli Maclin (All-Academic, All-District), Aerie Quinn (All-Tournament), and Joya Crawford (District 13-3A Most Valuable Player, District 13-3A Tournament Most Valuable Player.
