Dyersburg State dominates doubleheader against Pellissippi

Coming off a start of the week which saw the Lady Eagles drop
four games in two days at home, the Dyersburg State softball team began to
bounce back on Friday as the DSCC girls took a doubleheader in convincing fashion
from new conference foe Pellissippi State on Friday afternoon.
Dyersburg State took the first game of the day, 10-2, via
the eight-run mercy rule over PSCC. The Lady Eagle scoring continued into the
second game with a 12-2 win over Pellissippi State.
Game 1: Dyersburg State 10, Pellissippi State 2
Behind a four-hit performance by Jada Moore, the Leady Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit during the bottom of the third to score nine straight and take the opening game by eight runs.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Moore singled to
get the DSCC offense going then scored on a Chloe Jones triple to tie the game.
Madyson Lanier singled in Jones then Chanley Price singled another run home for
the Lady Eagles. Katelynn Cotton followed with a third straight RBI single to
put DSCC on top 5-2 after three innings.
A bit of déjà vu followed in the bottom of the fourth as a
one-out single from Moore got Dyersburg State going again. Emme Bullington
helped her own cause in the circle with an RBI double then Lanier doubled in
two moments later to push the Lady Eagle lead to 8-2 after four innings.
The Lady Eagles were approaching the mercy rule in the
bottom of the fifth and it was only fitting for Moore to be the one to end
things after setting the table during the previous two frames. A Mallory
Velotta singled with one out was followed two batters later by a two-run homer to
left by Moore to put Dyersburg State up eight and bring the mercy rule into
play.
Moore had three singles and a homer with two RBI while
Lanier doubled and singled, driving in three.
In the circle, Bullington held PSCC to two runs on one hit
with four strikeouts over five innings.
Game 2: Dyersburg State 12, Pellissippi State 2
The Lady Eagles picked up their second mercy-rule win of the day in Game 2 thanks to an eight-run third inning by the Dyersburg State bats.
Like the first game, Dyersburg State entered the bottom of
the third down 2-1. Again, a big bottom of the third proved to be the
difference as Lanier reached on an error then Jones singled. Following a lineout,
Cotton singled to load the bases before a Madyson Morton walk brought home the
tying run. Allie Shires grounded out to third but Jones scored to give DSCC the
lead. Keaton Wheeler drew a walk to load the bases again then Kylie Chapman
walked to bring home another run. Following her four-hit opening game, Moore
drove home two more with a double to left before a Lanier reached on another
error to score two more to push the Lady Eagle lead to six runs. Jones singled
in another run but was tagged out trying to advance to second to end the inning
with the Lady Eagles on top 9-2.
Back-to-back extra base hits by the Lady Eagles with two
outs in the bottom of the fourth plated three more runs as Macy Calhoun doubled
in two then scored on Velotta’s triple to give Dyersburg State a commanding
12-2 lead after four innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, the DSCC defense and Price allowed only a two out single before retiring the PSCC team in the frame to end the game and secure the win.
Velotta led the way at the plate for the Lady Eagles with a
triple and a single, driving in two while Jones had two singles and an RBI.
Chapman picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs
on four hits with four strikeouts in three innings of work. Price pitched the
final two innings of relief, allowing a hit.
The Lady Eagles have a short turnaround as the Dyersburg State
hosts Walters State at noon on Saturday in another conference doubleheader.
