With the season on the line and a spot in the region
semifinals up for grabs, the Lady Choctaws’ turned to their three seniors who
combined to score 51 points during Dyer County’s 68-56 win over Haywood in
Brownsville on Friday night.
Dyer County entered the game as the No. 4 seed coming out of
District 13-3A while the Lady Tomcats were the District 14-3-A Champions.
In a pretty high-scoring opening quarter, Dyer County was
able to stay ahead of Haywood’s scoring pace thanks their senior trio. Tykeria
Kennedy scored eight while Alijah Robinson tossed in four to go along with a
four-point frame by Anitra Honore to take a 24-20 lead after one quarter.
Dyer County’s defense held the Lady Tomcats to a trio of
three-pointers in the second quarter. In the meantime, the Lady Choctaws got a
pair of treys from Molly Roberts and five more points by Honore to help extend
the orange and white’s lead to 39-29 at the half.
Despite a six-point frame by Robinson in the third quarter,
the Lady Choctaws struggled scoring as the Lady Tomcats clawed their way back
into the game to take a 49-48 lead after three quarters.
The Lady Choctaws would not be denied though. A ten-point quarter
by Kennedy – including a 7-of-8 performance from the line as well as a couple
buckets from Honroe helped the Dyer County girls rally with a 20-point frame to
take the 12-point win over Haywood and advance to the region semifinals.
Kennedy led the way for the Lady Choctaws with 18 points
while Robinson tossed in 17. Honore scored 16 in the win.
Dyer County advances to the Region 7-3A Semifinals in Newbern
on Monday night where the Lady Choctaws will face South Gibson at 7:30 p.m. at
