Dyer County’s Hinson named TBCA Sectional Coach of the Year

Image
Jason Peevyhouse  Editor, JP Productions With the start of the 2025 baseball season less than two months away, Dyer County Head Coach Derek Hinson has been honored by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association for his performance during the Choctaws’ run to a second straight TSSAA Class 3A State Tournament as he has been named the Sectional Coach of the Year for Regions 7 and 8. In his first year as a high school head coach, Hinson led the Choctaws to a 26-13 mark and an appearance in the TSSAA Class 3A State Tournament for the second straight season. “It’s kind of cliché to say it’s all about the players and your assistant coach, which, it is – 100 percent,” Hinson explained. “I don’t receive this if not for them because of the hard work they but in every day.” Hinson, heading into his second year, knows the expectations are set higher after his and the Choctaws’ success last season. “I know am very appreciative of all this because you’re not promised that you’re going...

Lady Eagles hold off Jackson State late rally for win

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Though Dyersburg State women took a ten-point lead into the final ten minutes of action on Wednesday night in the Ed Lannom Jr. Gymnasium against Jackson State, the Lady Eagles had to fight for the win as the Lady Green Jays flew back into the contest with a strong fourth quarter before DSCC swapped them down for the 66-61 win. Back-to-back buckets from Jackson State’s Marillyei Hart cut the Dyersburg State lead back to six points with just over nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. But, Lady Eagle Paris Halliburton hit three of four free throws to push the lead back to 54-045 with 7:45 remaining in the game. A Word From the Outlaw – 002

Last Tuesday was a big day for three former Major League Baseball players as Ichiro, C.C. Sabathia and Billy Wagner were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I have written about Hall of Fame selections for over 20 years now and there have been plenty of times when I have questioned the voters thinking and decisions. This year has a pretty good class going into the Hall but I do have to wonder what the one guy who didn’t vote for Ichiro was thinking. I saw somewhere calling him the all-time hits leader. Naw. Sorry, but for all his faults, Pete Rose is still the all-time leader in hits. It is what it is. You want the all-time hits leader in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, but Rose in now. Getting back to Ichiro, how do you look at that hit total and be like “you know, I just don’t think he belongs in.” That’s like looking a one of those milkshakes from the Grind in Martin and being like “meh”. The same thing happened with Derek Jeter a few years bac...
