Though Dyersburg State women took a ten-point lead into the final ten minutes of action on Wednesday night in the Ed Lannom Jr. Gymnasium against Jackson State, the Lady Eagles had to fight for the win as the Lady Green Jays flew back into the contest with a strong fourth quarter before DSCC swapped them down for the 66-61 win.

Back-to-back buckets from Jackson State’s Marillyei Hart cut the Dyersburg State lead back to six points with just over nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. But, Lady Eagle Paris Halliburton hit three of four free throws to push the lead back to 54-045 with 7:45 remaining in the game. Jackson State battled back with a free throw from Tamyra Patterson and two more by Hart opened an 11-2 run by the Lady Green Jays which only saw a lone bucket DSCC’s Lilly Bennett and tie the game at 56-56 with 4:07 left in the game.

The Lady Eagles were able to benefit from two fouls and a technical moments later as Alana Seals hit four of four from the free throw line while Rebecca Wood added another free throw in response of a Jackson State bucket to put Dyersburg State back up by four. Jackson State got a Hart free throw and a bucket by Je’Leah Cole to cut the Dyersburg State lead to one. The Lady Green Jays looked to steal the lead moments later following a Lady Eagle turnover but Dyersburg State answered before damage could be done with a Makayla Skinner steal.

From there, Wood and Jakarrah Anderson each added two free throws to seal the Dyersburg State win.

Both teams battled through a back-and-forth opening quarter which saw eight lead changes in the first three minutes. But, with the game tied at 8-8, a three-point play from Sanayah Starks opened a quick run which saw Dyersburg State take a 13-9 lead. The Lady Green Jays cut it back to one later in the frame before a three-pointer by DSCC’s Wood put the Lady Eagles back up 16-12 after one quarter.

Dyersburg State opened the second quarter strong with a pair of Wood buckets to open a 12-6 run by the Lady Eagles to take a 28-18 lead with 6:20 left in the half. Jackson State was able to trim the lead back to three with 1:26 left in the half but a three-pointer from Anderson and a Seals bucket gave Dyersburg State a 35-30 lead heading into the half.

Jackson State cut the lead back to three points early in the second half, cutting the Dyersburg State lead to 39-36 after a Cole bucket with just over six minutes left. The Lady Eagles went on a run to get some breathing room which included hitting seven of eight free throw attempts to take a 12-point lead late in the third quarter. Jackson State answered back to cut the lead to single digits before a Bennett free throw put Dyersburg State on top 51-41 going into the fourth quarter.

Wood led the way for the Lady Eagles with 12 points while Seals added 11. Bennett tossed in 10 in the win.

The Lady Eagles return to the court on Saturday when Dyersburg State travels to Cleveland State at 2 p.m.
