A Word from the Outlaw 006
A Word From The Outlaw 006
Sorry for the delay, folks but after that night of exciting basketball over at Dyer County High School, I needed to check out and rest from a pair of upsets in the District 13-3A Boys Tournament on Tuesday night.
Easy to say the game of the night was the nightcap which needed an extra frame to be decided as the Choctaws knocked off the regular season district champion Obion County Central boys 69-67 in overtime to punch their ticket to the district title game for the second straight season.
As thrilling as the finish of the game was with Jamin Gauldin’s layup to go ahead and Central’s mad dash to try to tie it before their thoroughly defended layup came up short, getting to overtime was something that probably would have wound up on Sportscenter had things played out a little different.
Bo Dodds shot at the end of regulation was a sight to see but, unfortunately for the Choctaws, it was after the buzzer. In fact, if I am remembering correctly, the judgment is that it takes 0.3 on the clock just to get a tip in be ruled good. Still, the turn and one-step shot made that gym erupt as loud as I have ever heard it. And by the athlete known more for tennis than basketball – until Tuesday night. I expect the folks who were in attendance on Tuesday night will be talking about that shot – whether it should have counted, shouldn’t have counted and, holy cow, it went it – for years to come. Welcome to local folklore, Bo Dodds.
Dyer County making the district tournament championship is a tradition for the Choctaws under Derek McCord, who has guided the orange and white to the final game of the tournament far more times than not since the first tournament he coached in 2007. This year, it was probably not the odds-on pick but – like college basketball in March – upsets and big games happen in February in high school sports.
Earlier in the night, the other higher seed fell as Dyersburg defeated South Gibson in impressive fashion, getting their first win over the Hornets after two tries during the regular season.
I was not there for the second game but I can tell you without stepping out of line here that Dyersburg should have split with South Gibson in the regular season. The Trojans did pretty much everything they needed to in the first game but the win just didn’t happen.
To me, this wasn’t as much an upset as much as the Trojans reminding the rest of the district that they are, in fact, the two-time defending champs.
On Tuesday, the Trojans took care of business and advanced to the district championship game for the third straight season.
This also marks the third time in four years of District 13-3A play that the Dyer County and Dyersburg boys will meet in the tournament – the second straight in the title game. I would get to Dyer County early on Thursday night. It’s going to be a packed out house. Wear your orange and white or black and gold and let’s see if we can make that gym even louder.
