Dyer County turned a low-scoring game early into a double-digit lead in the second half on the way to a 70-42 win over Crockett county in the first round of the District 13-3A Tournament in Newbern on Monday night.

Dyer County took control early after a Crockett County bucket to open the game as the Choctaws got a free throw and a three-pointer by Jamin Gauldin to open a 13-3 run through much of the quarter. A pair of Gauldin free throws later in the quarter helped Dyer County take a 13-7 lead after one half.

Crockett County was able to cut the Choctaw lead to four early in the second quarter. Dyer County responded, getting buckets from Ryker Hayes and Gauldin then Gauldin and Seabourn later in the low-scoring second frame to take a 23-14 lead at the half.

The Choctaws came out on fire in the third quarter. Buckets from Hayes and Jayden Tyler opened the second quarter scoring for the Dyer County boys. After a Crockett County bucket with 6:26 left in the frame, the Choctaws defense held the Cavaliers to just one bucket over the next five minutes. In the meantime, the Choctaws scored 13 - including six from Hayes as the orange and white took a 41-22 lead at the end of three quarters.

From there, the Choctaws held off the Cavaliers to secure the win and advance to the district semifinals.

Hayes led the way for the Choctaws with 20 points while Bo Dodds added 14. Gauldin tossed in 13 and Hayward scored 11 in the win.

Dyer County returns to action on Saturday night when the Choctaws face top-seeded Obion County Central in the semifinals of the District 13-3A Tournament at 7:30 p.m. in Newbern.
