The Trojans were able to get out ahead early and use a
dominant second quarter to build a double-digit halftime lead then held off the
Hornets late on the way to a 65-43 win over South Gibson in the District 13-3A
Tournament Semifinals on Tuesday night at Dyer County High School in Newbern.
The Trojans jumped out early, answering an early Gavin Crawford three-pointer with a 6-0 run built on buckets from Breyden Turnage, Jeff Cobb and Jace Ward. South Gibson got a bucket to end that scoring spree but Dyersburg’s A.J. Higgins got a three-point play to open a 7-3 run to end the frame and give the Trojans a 13-8 lead after one quarter.
Dyersburg dominated the second quarter with a balance
scoring attack as Cobb had a jumper and a three-pointer as part of a 13-3 close
to the first half to build a 26-11 halftime lead for the black and gold.
Though the Hornets had a better offensive time in the third quarter, the Trojans were there to match them point-for-point. Dyersburg answered an early free throw from South Gibson with a 12-5 run – capped by two free throws from Marcus Wharton and another by Cameron Rhines – to build a 38-17 lead with just over two minutes left in the frame. The Trojan lead was as high as 21 late in the frame after a Higgins bucket with 44 seconds left. A late surge by South Gibson cut the Dyersburg lead to 42-26 at the end of three quarters.
South Gibson’s rally continued into the fourth quarter as a
three-pointer from Crawford highlighted a 10-2 run which was finally ended by a
Turnage layup with 4:33 left in the game. The Turnage bucket, though, began an
8-0 run which doubled the Dyersburg lead. After a bucket from South Gibson’s
Keon Thomas, the Trojans answered with a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Ward led the way for the Trojans with 20 points while Rhines
tossed in 11. Turnage added 10.
With the win, Dyersburg advances to the District 13-3A
Tournament Championship Game where it will face the winner of the second semifinal
game between top-seeded Obion County Central and Dyer County. The district
championship game will be played Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Dyer County
High School.
