Dyer County kept its hot streak going into the second game
of the week as the Choctaw softball team defeated visiting Jackson Christian
School 13-3 on Tuesday evening in Newbern.
After Jackson Christian School got on the board in the top
of the first with a Coffman RBI double, Dyer County answered in its half of the
inning. Kierstyn Ray led off the frame with a single then advanced to second on
a passed ball. Katie Beth Caldwell followed with a single and moved up a base
on an error by JCS on the same play. That same error also allowed Ray to score
and tie the game at 1-1 after one inning.
The Choctaw defense got through the top of the second in order
then looked to put another run on the board as Molly Kate Woody helped out her
own cause with a two-out double. Abbie Gibbons followed with a single to drive
her in and put Dyer County on top 2-1 after two innings.
The lead for Dyer County didn’t last long as Robinson
homered to lead off the Eagle half of the third and tie the game at 2-2. But,
after a Holt double, the Lady Choctaws and Woody got the next three batters to
end the threat with the game still tied.
The Choctaws picked up momentum in the bottom of the third
with a big answer. Caldwell led off with a single and Emma Wray reached on an
error to open the frame. Key then reached on another error which allowed two
runs to score and return the lead to Dyer County. A pair of pop outs followed
but Woody singled to plate a run then Gibbons doubled in another. A third error
of the inning by JCS proved costly as it allowed Ray to reach base and Gibbons
to score to give Dyer County a 7-2 lead after three innings.
Woody had some momentum in the circle as well, striking out
the side in the top of the fourth to maintain the five-run lead by the
Choctaws.
Dyer County went back to work in the bottom of the fourth. A
leadoff walk by Caldwell was followed two batters later by an RBI single from
Key. Natalie Armstrong doubled in another run then scored on an RBI single from
Kennedy Hill. Woody continued to make contact, this time reaching on an error
which scored another run for the Choctaws and extend the Dyer County lead to
nine.
Two batters later, Ray doubled in Woody’s courtesy runner,
Emma McGavock then scored on an Evie Rogers single to put Dyer County on top 13-2
heading into the fifth.
Needing just three outs to end it early but also facing the
top of the JCS order, Holt doubled in a run to cut the Dyer County lead to ten
with one out. But, Woody and the Choctaw defense got the next two batters to
ground out and fly out to end the threat and the game via mercy rule.
Ray had a double and two singles with an RBI to lead the way
for Dyer County at the plate while Gibbons and Woody had a double and single
apiece. Caldwell had a pair of singles in the win.
Woody picked up the win in the circle, allowing three runs
on four hits with six strikeouts. Ava Hart got the save, allowing one run on
two hits in one inning of work.
Dyer County returns to action on Thursday when the Choctaws
host Lexington at 5:30 p.m. in a day of varsity-only action.
