Choctaws rallies then holds off Arlington to close week

Despite trailing by three runs heading into the fourth inning, Dyer County scored four unanswered runs over the next three frames then held off the Tigers in the seventh to get the 4-3 win to close a busy week of spring break baseball on the road in Arlington.

The Choctaws made their first cut into the three-run Arlington lead in the top of the fourth as Ty Johnson singled in a run to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the Tigers favor after three and a half innings.

The Choctaws pulled even with the Tigers in the top of the fifth. Jake Gentry drew a walk then Koleman Pride was hit by a pitch with one out to give Dyer County two runners on with one out. A groundout put Arlington on the doorstep of getting out of the frame unscathed but Landon Daniels’ flyball to right was misplayed allowing two runs to score and tie the game at 3-3 after the top of the fifth.

Another miscue by the Tigers the following inning proved even more costly. E WRAY drew a walk then his courtesy runner – David Headtke – advanced to second on a passed ball then to third on a Johnson single. Headtke was then home later in the inning on a balk to put Dyer County on top 4-3 after the top of the sixth.

Dyer County was able to get out of the sixth after a leadoff double from Arlington’s Tillman but were unable to add to the Choctaw lead in the top of the seventh.

After the leadoff batter of the bottom of the seventh was hit by a pitch, a double-play put the Choctaws on the verge of getting the win. But, a Register double and back-to-back walks loaded the bases before a flyout ended the game for the Dyer County win.

Johnson led the way at the plate for the Choctaws with a pair of singles.

Everett Kuykendall picked up the win on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits with a strikeout in seven innings of work.

Dyer County returns to action on Monday when the Choctaws close out the 12-game roadtrip to open the season when the orange and white make the short journey to Dyersburg to open District 13-3A play at 6:30 p.m.
