The Choctaw softball team continued a busy week on the
diamond on Thursday, picking up their third win in four days with an 11-1 win
over visiting Lexington in five innings at Dyer County High School.
The orange and white had a big bottom of the first inning, getting
on the board early to set the tone. Kierstyn Ray led off the frame with a
double then scored on a Katie Beth Caldwell single to put Dyer County on top
1-0. Emma Wray doubled in a run then scored on a Rylee Key single. The Choctaws
added another run on a Rylee White sacrifice fly to go up 4-0 after one inning.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the second, the Choctaws went back
to work on offense in the bottom of the frame. Abbie Gibbons led off with a
single then scored on a Ray single. Evie Rogers followed with an RBI double
then scored when Caldwell reached on a fielder’s choice to put Dyer County on
top 7-0 after two frames.
Lexington was able to get one of those runs back on a Bartholomew
single with two out in the top of the third but Dyer County got out of the
frame when she was thrown out trying to advance on the same play and maintain a
7-1 lead.
Dyer County answered with two out in the bottom of the
frame. Singles from Gibbons and Ray were followed by a Rogers base it to score
them both. Rogers then scored when Caldwell reached on an error to score
another run and extend the Dyer County lead to 10-1 after three frames.
After the Tigers looked to get on the board with the bases-loaded
in the top of the fifth but failed to score, Dyer County went to work to end
the game early. Ray reached on an error then advanced to second on the same
play. After a flyout, Caldwell singled her in to bring the game to a close via
the mercy rule.
Ray had a double and two singles with an RBI to lead the way
at the plate for Dyer County. Rogers had a double and a single while driving in
three. Caldwell, Key and Gibbons each added a pair of singles in the win.
Key picked up the win in the circle, allowing one run on one
hit with one strikeout in four innings of work. Molly Kate Woody pitched the
fifth, allowing a hit with a strikeout.
Dyer County will be in action this weekend in Murfreesboro,
participating in the Warrior Classic. The Choctaws return to action on this
side of the Tennessee River when Dyer County opens a Monday-Tuesday
home-and-home set with Tipton-Rosemark in Millington on Monday at 6 p.m.
