Dyer County tops Bolivar to advance to region semifinals

Dyer County’s lead swelled to as much as 21 points on Saturday night in the Region 7-3A Quarterfinals against the Tigers but had to hold off a late surge by Bolivar before taking a 73-70 win at Dyer County High School.

With a 10-point frame by Ryker Hayes, Dyer County also got seven points from Jamin Gauldin to take a 23-12 lead after one quarter,


The Tigers rallied with a 19-point frame by Bolivar to cut into the Choctaw lead. But, an eight-point frame by Tristen Seabourn helped minimize the damage as Dyer County took a 40-31 lead into the locker room at the half.

Eight points from Hayes and five by Devin Hayward helped push the Dyer County lead to 59-44 heading into the fourth quarter – leading by as much as 21 points during the frames.

The Tigers roared back in the fourth quarter with 24 points, cutting deep into the Choctaw lead including trimming it to one point with less than 30 seconds left. But, throughout the fourth quarter, Dyer County was able to answer big three-pointers from the Tigers to get them to that point with buckets from Seabourn and Hayes. Dyer County also hit 10 of 16 free throws with shots at the line being hit by Hayward, Bo Dodds and Gauldin to help secure the win.

Hayes led the way for Dyer County with 23 points while Gauldin added 18. Seabourn tossed in 16 and Hayward scored 10 the get the win. Hayes, Seabourn and Hayward all also had double-doubles.

The win puts Dyer County in the region semifinals for the first time since 2020. The Choctaws will face Fayette Ware in the Region 7-3A Semifinals on Tuesday night at Dyer County High School at 7:30 p.m. A win in the semifinals will put the orange and white in a region championship game for the first time since 2014.
