Halls Middle School drew first blood on Thursday during softball action at Dyer County High School against Northview, but the Lady Choctaws answered and then some, scoring seven times in the bottom of the first as well as eight in the fourth to take a 16-4 win over the Lady Tigers.
Halls got on the board in the top of the first when Lewis
tripled then scored on an error to put the Lady Tigers on top 1-0 after a half
an inning.
Northview went to work to ensure the lead was not lengthy. Lyla
Beth Woody walked to lead off the inning then scored on a Berkley Childress
single to tie the game. Kate Benedetto singled in another run to give the Lady
Choctaws the lead. Two batters later, Rylee Price singled in a run to add to
the Northview lead then Ella Wright doubled in two more to give the Lady Choctaws
a four-run cushion. Wright then scored on a Lilly Tucker single. A Woody ground
out later in the inning put Northview on top 7-1 after one inning.
Northview tacked on a run in the bottom of the third as Price
reached on an error then scored on a Tucker groundout to push the Lady Choctaw lead
to 8-1 after three innings.
Halls cut into the lead in the top of the fourth, getting an
RBI single from Webster who stole home later in the inning to cut the Northview
advantage to 8-3 after three and a half innings.
Northview tacked on a big fourth inning in response. With two
on and one out, an Emily Hall double led to three runs as two scored on a hit then
she scored as well. Later in the inning, Wright singled then scored on Tucker
RBI single. The runs kept coming as Woody followed with an RBI single then Benedetto
drove in another with a base hit. Harper Peery reached on an error to score
another run and put the Lady Choctaws on top 16-3 after four innings.
Halls was able to tack on a run in the top of the fifth after
a Burks double on a Lewis groundout. But, following back-to-back singles by Tetleton
and Vaughn as well as walk by Webster to load the bases, the Lady Choctaws
ended the game with a groundout to seal the win.
Hall and Wright led the way at the plate for the Lady Choctaws,
each getting a double and a single while driving in two runs apiece. Benedetto,
Childress and Permeter also had two singles each in the win.
Peery picked up the win in the circle, allowing three runs
on three hits with eight strikeouts.
Northview returns to action on Monday when the Lady Choctaws
host Martin Middle School at 5:30 p.m. in Newbern.
