With two wins this week heading into the final action of the
Lady Choctaws’ spring break schedule, the Dyer County softball team doubled
their win total for the week in one day, sweeping a doubleheader from visiting
Westview on Thursday evening in Newbern.
Dyer County gutted out a 3-2 win in the opener then
dominated the nightcap with a trio of homers – two from sophomore Katie Beth
Caldwell – for a 17-3 win over the Lady Chargers.
Dyer County 3, Westview 2, Game 1
Lady Choctaw Rylee Key outdueled Tennessee commit McCall
Sims in the opening game of the doubleheader of five-inning games.
The Lady Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the
second to break the scoreless tie but in an unconventional way. Emma Wray led
off the frame with a walk then moved to second two batters later. After advancing
to third on a passed ball later in Rylee White’s walk, Wray scored on a dropped
third strike which allowed Kennedy Hill to also advance to first and give the Lady
Choctaws 1-0 lead after two innings.
Kierstyn Ray singled to lead off the bottom of the third but Sims struck out the next two batters and looked to get out of the inning with Westview still trailing by one. Wray struck again, this time doubling in a run. Fellow junior then tripled her in to put Dyer County on top 3-0 after three frames.
Sims helped get her team on the board in the top of the
fourth, getting a single then advancing all the way to third on an error on the
same play. Another error led to the first Westview run as the Lady Chargers
plated two in the frame to cut the Dyer County lead to 3-2 after three and a
half innings.
Dyer County was unable to threaten in the bottom of the
fourth but Westview looked to get on the board in the top of the fifth. Laken
Rogers singled with one out. After a pop out to right, Byars singled then
looked to advance on a throw to third only to be throw out at second to end the
game and secure the Lady Choctaw win.
Key picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs on
five hits with six strikeouts.
Key also had one of the two extra base hits for the Lady Choctaws,
an RBI triple.
Wray added an RBI double in the win for Dyer County as well
as two runs scored.
Dyer County 17, Westview 3
With home and away swapped as this was part of a make-up
from last Thursday’s postponement, Westview took a 2-1 lead after one inning
before a 10-run Lady Choctaw frame set the tone for the next four innings as
Dyer County took the 14-run win to complete the sweep.
The Lady Choctaws struck with a big fly in the top of the
first as Katie Beth Caldwell sent a pitch over the centerfield wall to give Dyer
County a 1-0 lead after a half inning.
Westview answered in the bottom of the frame as Sims sent a
1-1 pitch over the left field fence to tie the game. Later in the inning, Maddie
Gray doubled in a run to put Westview on top 2-1 after an inning.
Dyer County’s big inning game in the top of the second. Key and Molly Kate Woody led off the frame with singles then advanced on a perfect sacrifice bunt from Natalie Armstrong. Kennedy Hill followed with a two-run double to plate both then scored on an Addie Gibbons double. Two batters later, Evie Rogers doubled in a run then Caldwell homered for the second straight inning – this time a three-run shot to put the Lady Choctaws up six.
The hits kept coming as Wray tripled and Key walked before
freshman Woody homered to left to put Dyer County on top 11-2 after an inning
and a half.
Woody and the Dyer County defense sat the Lady Chargers down
in order in the second then the Lady Choctaws went back to work at the plate.
Rogers singled in a run then scored on a Caldwell single to extend the Dyer County
lead to 13-2.
Westview got back on the board in the bottom of the third on
a flyout by Gray to score a run and cut the Lady Choctaw lead to 13-3 after
three innings.
Armstrong and Hill led off the top of the fourth by reaching
on errors before Gibbons singled in a run. Ray followed with a two-run double. Two
batters later, Caldwell drove in another run, this time on a flyout to put Dyer
County on top 17-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
From there, sophomore Ava Hart came in and retired all six
batters she faced to help seal the win for the Lady Choctaws.
After the early scoring by the Lady Chargers, Woody allowed
only three runs on three hits with six strikeouts in three innings of work.
Hart pitched the final two innings, holding Westview hitless while striking out
four.
Caldwell led the way at the plate for the Lady Choctaws with
two homers and a single with six RBI in the win. Woody had a single and a homer
while driving in three. Rogers and Gibbons each had a double and a single in the
win which saw Dyer County total 14 hits.
Dyer County returns to action on Monday when the Lady Choctaws
travel to Arlington at 6:15 p.m.
