The Lady Falcons fell behind early and battled back later but were unable to get out of the early hole before falling 8-4 on Tuesday afternoon in Tiptonville.

The Lady Red Devils scored in each of the first four innings, including jumping out to a 6-0 lead after the top of the third inning. The second inning proved to be a costly one as South Fulton scored three times with two outs before ending the inning ahead by four runs.

Lake County finally got onto the board in the bottom third with two outs. With a 1-2 count after fouling off three straight pitches, Mariah Valentine’s tenacity at the plate was rewarded when she reached on an error by South Fulton’s right fielder, advancing all the way to third. Caren Johnson followed, also reaching on an error to plate Valentine and cut the South Fulton lead to 6-1 after three innings.

South Fulton got that run back in the top of the next inning to go up 7-1.

Lake County was able to get on the board again in the bottom of the fifth and, again, the scoring game with two outs. Valentine drew a walk then Johnson singled to give the Lady Falcons two on. McKensi Hays then doubled them both in to cut the Lady Red Devil lead to 7-3 after five innings.

South Fulton then answered with a run in the top of the sixth to push its lead back to 8-3.

The Lady Falcons had one more two-out rally left in them, this one coming in their final at bat of the day. Kaitlin Jones reached on an error then Aailyah Shell made it aboard via a South Fulton miscue which also scored a run to cut the Lady Red Devils’ lead to four. But, a groundout ended the Lady Falcon threat and sealed the win for South Fulton.

Jones had two of the Lady Falcons’ four hits, a double and a single.

The Lady Falcons return to action on Thursday when Lake County hosts Haywood at 6 p.m.
