Despite trailing for the first five innings on Thursday
night in Newbern, Three Oaks’ baseball team (9-0) put together an eight-run sixth
inning to take a 9-2 win over Northview (2-3) in middle school action.
“It’s always a great game anytime you are able to get
Northview and Three Oaks on the field competing against each other,” Three Oaks
Head Coach Hayden Campbell said. “I am very proud of our team for not giving up
when facing adversity early on. Maddox Davis came up big on the mound for us,
he kept us in the game with his outing in relief. I couldn’t be prouder of the
amount of fight we showed.”
After cutting Northview’s 2-0 lead in half in the top of the
third inning with a Maddox Davis RBI single, Three Oaks was unable to push
another run across over the next two innings despite having the bases loaded
and one out in the top of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, though, the
Choctaws from Upper Finley Road broke through in a big way. Grayson Daniels
reached on an error but was taken off the basepaths on a Crawford Childress fielder’s
choice. Two batters later Three Oaks tied it up on a Tallon Harrell single. Three
Oaks then got in front two batters later on a Landon Todd groundout to go up
3-2.
The majority of the TOMS damage came with two outs as
Harrell scored on a wild pitch then Davis singled in another run to give the Choctaws
from Upper Finley Road a three-run lead. Cullen Messer added an RBI single then
Daniels doubled in a run to push the lead to six. Childress then singled in another
run to put the Three Oaks boys on top 9-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Three Oaks was able to work around a two-out hit batter to get the final out and secure the win on Northview’s home field.
Northview picked up its two runs in the bottom of the second
on an RBI double from Neyland Murray which also led to him scoring on a wild
pitch to give the Choctaws from Newbern a 2-0 lead after two innings.
“Proud of our
kids,” Northview Head Coach Jacob Stewart said. “They played extremely hard,
and competed every pitch all night. One inning got away from us, and that was
the difference in the game.”
Todd, Davis and Nate Vick each led the way for Three Oaks with a pair of singles each in the win. Murray and Clark Ross each had doubles to account for two of Northview’s four hits in the loss.
Davis picked up the win on the mound for Three Oaks,
allowing no runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Ross took the loss on
the mound, allowing five unearned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in
5.1 innings.
Three Oaks returns to action on Monday when the Choctaws
from Upper Finley Road travel to Trinity Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Northview heads back onto the diamond on Monday, March 24 when the
Choctaws from Newbern host Dyersburg Middle School at 5:30 p.m.
