A Word From the Outlaw 011

The spring season is pretty much on pause for us here in Dyer County as we await the waters to recede from the storms and subsequent rainfall late last week.

Needless to say, this makes it a little hard to talk about things as here in Dyer County and Dyersburg, sports have taken a back seat to the flooding affecting our local residents. By all means, keep these folks in your prayers.

Also, I would ask that you keep the family of Tony Riggs, longtime friend to the sports of baseball here in Dyer County and Dyersburg.

Part of me wanted to sit down and write out some words last week but, I must confess, my feelings about losing another good friend at a young age is something I couldn’t put into words.

In many ways, though, I have to feel like no matter how many times between now and when my time comes to leave this world that every time I go out to the Ed Wright Baseball Complex, Tony will still be there in some form.

Late last week, the ballfields out by the fairgrounds were dealt a cruel punch in the gut by Mother Nature as there was damage to the fields from the storms.

Dyer County Mayor David Quick has been keeping folks updated on the fallout from that on Facebook.

With that in mind I do encourage one thing to the folks out at the ballfields. When things are rebuilt, upgraded or whatever the final plan becomes, please name something out there after the man who many of us think of first when we think of the Dixie Youth fields out by the fairgrounds. Tony Riggs Field has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

But, in closing, I want to end this week's column with a quote from Jim Ross.

"I hope that I could be as good a man as him, so that I can see him again someday".
