Choctaw softball dominates Central in 13-3A matchup
Dyer County’s softball team moved to 4-0 on the week including three straight wins over District 13-3A opponents as the Choctaws traveled to Troy and returned from Obion County Central with an 11-0 win over the Lady Rebels on Thursday night.
Dyer County got on the board in the top of the first as a one-out
walk from Katie Beth Caldwell and a Rylee Key single put two on base. After a
popout, the Lady Rebels looked to get out of it but a passed ball allowed
Caldwell to score and put the Choctaws up 1-0 after a half inning.
The orange and white’s big inning came in the top of the
second frame. A double from Natalie Armstrong and walks by Kennedy Hill and
Evie Rogers loaded the bases with no one out. Abbie Gibbons drew a bases loaded
walk then Caldwell doubled in two runs two batters later. Key followed with
another two-run double to extend the Choctaws’ lead to six. Allie Ables then
singled in a run to put Dyer County on top 7-0 after the top of the first.
For the next three innings, the Lady Rebel defense was able
to hold the orange and white in check, but the Central offense only managed one
hit in the fourth (an Addison Moprhis single) and two in the fifth (singles
from Emma Bratton and Harlee Johnson) to send the game into the sixth.
Back-to-back singles to lead off the frame by Kierstyn Ray
and Caldwell looked to be squandered with a pop out and a ground out. But, Emma
Wray walked to load the bases then an Armstrong single netted two runs. Hill followed
with another two-run single to give the Choctaws an 11-0 lead heading into the
bottom of the sixth.
In the last of the sixth, Dyer County retired Central in
order to seal the win for the orange and white.
Caldwell, Armstrong and Key each had a double and a single
for the Choctaws in the win while Ables and Rogers each had a pair of singles.
Ava Hart picked up the shutout win in the circle, allowing
just five hits and striking out four in the victory.
Dyer County heads to Alabama for the weekend before
returning home on Monday to take on South Gibson in District 13-3A action at 5
p.m. Central heads back onto the field on Monday when the Lady Rebels host
Gibson County at 5 p.m.
