Coming off a pair of tough road losses at South Gibson and McCracken County over the previous 48 hours, the Choctaws got back home and got back on the winning track heading into the final week of the regular season with a 15-5 win over visiting Bartlett in matinee action on Friday.

Dyer County came out of the gates strong with a four-run first inning. Jack Smith doubled to open the bottom of the first then scored on a double by Talon Messer. Jake Gentry followed with a triple to add to the Dyer County lead before Easton Ozment reached on an error by the Bartlett third baseman which scored two runs to give the Choctaws a 4-0 lead after one inning.

Bartlett had an answer, scoring three times in the top of the second to cut the Dyer County lead to 4-3 heading into the bottom of the second.

The Choctaws got one of their runs back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out, RBI single from Jake Stanley to give Dyer County a 5-3 lead after two innings.

Again the Panthers answered, scoring twice in the top of the third inning to pull even with the Choctaws at 5-5.

Dyer County’s offense continued to churn, getting walks by Weston Sims and Smith along with Trey Starnes reaching on an error to load the bases. David Headtke’s single brought home a run then Starnes scored on a passed ball to extend the lead. Messer reached on an error to plate another run and push the Dyer County lead to three. Later in the inning Headtke scored on a passed ball to put the Choctaws on top 9-5 after three innings.

Dyer County added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with its biggest inning of the day. Stanley reached on an error then Daniels singled on a hit-and-run to move him to third base. Sims continued to put the ball in play, singling in a run then Starnes followed with an RBI base hit. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Messer doubled, scoring three runs to put Dyer County on top 14-5 heading into the fifth inning.

The Choctaws closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth after working around a two-out double and a hit batter. Stanley was hit by a pitch then Daniels singled. Two batters later, Sims singled in Stanley’s pinch runner, Ty Johnson, to bring the mercy rule into play and end the game.

Messer led the way for the Choctaws at the plate with two doubles, a single and five RBI. Daniels and Sims each had a pair of singles for Dyer County.

Dalton Muncrief picked up the win on the mound, allowing five runs on five hits with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Nick Epperson pitched the final two innings, allowing just two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Dyer County returns to action on Saturday when the Choctaws travel to Munford at 2:30 p.m.
