Choctaws dominate Cavs, remain unbeaten in 13-3A
Dyer County got its second home-and-home series in District 13-3A play off to a resoundingly positive start as the Choctaws travelled to Alamo and returned with a 12-0 win over Crockett County on Monday night.
The orange and white got on the board early with two runs in
the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles from Jack Smith and David
Headtke opened the game and led to an RBI groundout by Talon Messer. Nick
Epperson then grounded out to second but also plated a run to put the Choctaws
on top 2-0 after a half inning.
The Cavaliers were retired in order and the Dyer County
defense was given a present in the form of a big inning by the Choctaws at the
plate in the top of the second. Everett Kuykendall opened with a walk then
Landon Daniels reached on an error. Two batters later, T STARNES reached on an
error that plated a run. With two out in the frame, Headtke was walked which
led to an error which saw Messer reach base and three players score to give the
Choctaws a 6-0 lead. The damage was still not over as Jake Gentry singled in a
run then Kuykendall doubled in two more to push the Dyer County advantage to
8-0 head into the bottom of the second.
Dyer County added another run in the top of the fourth as an
RBI single from Daniels pushed the Choctaw lead to 9-0.
The Choctaws tacked on three more in the top of the fifth.
An error and two walks loaded the bases for Epperson, who reached on an error
that scored one run. Gentry singled in two more to put Dyer County on top 12-0
heading into the bottom of the fifth.
In what turned into the final half inning, Smith and the
Dyer County defense worked around a leadoff single to get a strikeout, a line
out and a ground out to end the frame and secure the mercy-rule win.
Gentry was the only Choctaw with multiple hits in the win,
getting a trio of singles while driving in three as well.
Smith took the win in his second district start, allowing only
three hits in the shutout with three strikeouts.
Dyer County returns to action on Tuesday when the Choctaws
host Crockett County in the final game of the two-game, home-and-home District 13-3A
matchup set for 7 p.m. in Newbern.
