Coming off a nine-inning slugfest which saw the Choctaws
fall 10-9 to the Lady Rebels on the road, the offense was solidly on Dyer
County’s side of the field on Tuesday night as the orange and white softball
team defeated Tipton-Rosemark 10-0 in five innings in Newbern to earn a split
in the home-and-home series.
Both teams failed to score in the first two innings but the Choctaws got the momentum in the bottom of the third. A one-out single from Allie Ables was followed by a double by Abbie Gibbons. Kierstyn Ray singled to load the bases then Katie Beth Caldwell singled to score a run. Rylee Key, the Choctaw pitcher, helped her own cause with a two-run single to give Dyer County a 3-0 lead after three frames.
The Choctaws got out of the top of the fourth after a walk
and a two-out single then went back to work on offense. Natalie Armstrong drew
a leadoff walk then advanced on a Kennedy Hill sacrifice bunt. Ables singled in
a run then Abbie Gibbons sent a 2-1 pitch over the leftfield fence for a
two-run homer and a six-run Choctaw lead. Ray and Caldwell singled then Emma
Wray doubled in two-more runs. Later in the inning, Wray scored on a wild pitch
to give Dyer County a 9-0 lead after four frames.
Freshman Molly Kate Woody allowed only a one-out single then got the next batter to pop out and a strikeout to get out of the frame.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Choctaws got
things going in hopes of ending it early. A single from Gibbons was followed by
a Ray double to plate the senior and bring the mercy rule into play.
Gibbons led the way for the Lady Choctaws with a home run,
double and a single and two RBI while Ray added a double and two singles with a
run driven in. Caldwell and Ables each had a pair of singles in the win.
Key picked up the win, allowing no runs on two hits with a
strikeout.
Dyer County is scheduled to travel to Dyersburg on Thursday
at 7 p.m. to open District 13-3A play.
