Despite trailing for much of the game after a pair of first-inning
runs by the Cavaliers, the Choctaws, scored a run in the bottom of the seventh
to send the game to extra innings then got the win with a walk-off David
Headtke single in the bottom of the ninth for the 3-2 win over Crockett County
in Newbern on Tuesday night.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth and the game tied at 2-2, Jack Smith tripled to right as the Crockett County fielder charged forward but didn’t make the play. With a 1-1 count, Headtke singled to left to bring in Smith and seal the win for the Choctaws.
After being shutout in Monday night’s loss to the Choctaws, Crockett
County picked up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0
lead after a half inning.
Dyer County got one of those runs back in the bottom of the
second inning. With two outs, the rally started with a Landon Daniels single
then Weston Sims singled as well. Daniels scored moments later to cut the Crockett
County lead to 2-1 after two innings.
From there, a pitching battle ensued as both pitchers,
including Dyer County’s Landon Willis, battled through the next few innings.
Sims singled in the bottom of the fifth and Jack Smith drew a walk to give Dyer
County it’s first threat since the second inning. But, a pair of lineouts ended
the frame with the Choctaw still trailing 2-1.
Dyer County worked around a two-out walk in the sixth but
were unable to capitalize on a leadoff single from Nick Epperson to send the game
into the seventh still trailing by a run.
Crockett got a runner on in the seventh with a two-out
single but Willis struck out the next batter to send the game to the bottom of
the seventh.
Sims got his third single of the night to lead off the frame
then his courtesy runner, Taylor Starnes, advanced to second base on an Easton Ozment
sacrifice bunt. Smith drove him in with a single to tie the game. Dyer County looked
to get the win then as Talon Messer singled which pushed David Headtke to third
and Messer took second. But, a flyout to center sent the game into extra
innings.
In both the top of the eighth and ninth innings, Crockett
County was able to get the go ahead run to second base but, in both cases, a
pickoff play from the Choctaws resulted in an out to set up the bottom of the
night for Dyer County.
Sims led the way for the Choctaws with three singles. Smith
added a triple and a single while Messer had a pair of singles in the win.
Ozment got the win in relief, pitching a scoreless ninth
inning. Willis pitched the first eight innings, allowing two runs on four hits
with 15 strikeouts.
Dyer County is scheduled to return to action on Saturday
when the Choctaws are scheduled to host Brighton at 2:30 p.m.
